Total poppycock. These people are so entrenched in their stance that they are now going ALL IN. They really have nothing to lose by doing this. This is just an attempt by the scientists that got caught up in this mess to try and escape without having to admit they are wrong. They know they are wrong but do not want to lose their standing in academia and their upper tier incomes... by admitting it.
