I think this ends badly for the Big 12. Bowlsby seems to be negotiating scraps for the Little 8 about to be relegated to the AAC and the ESPN “Chevrolet” broadcast division. Meanwhile, Texas and Oklahoma move to the “Cadillac” broadcast division.

Will programs like Clemson be happy with the “Buick’s”.

We're probably Pontiac Aztek's.

I don't even think we qualify as Chevrolet.

ESPN has to be desperate since ratings continue to decline and they spent so much money years ago to only have most cut the cord. This doesn't surprise me one bit.

Correct.

If you look at 247 rankings on recruiting you will usually see 5 or 6 CUSA schools then 1 or 2 SBC schools and then 2 or 3 CUSA schools. Kids today just dont watch TV and they are not watching college football...

3 hours is a lifetime for them to have their nose out of their phones. Even kids that plays sports are not watching...they watch clips and the finial score. That's if they care at all. People are all caught up on their feelings and base opinions off that.

For the last 10 years the youth have chosen a new way to view the content they watch and that includes a group age going into their early to mid 30s.. Anyone with kids 30 or under should be able to see that. They only care about now or whats next....

its why ancient history dont mean crap to these kids and in 'ancient history' I mean even 10 years ago is pushing it

That's a part of why this is happening. The Elites and ESPN see the trends and they know the pie will not be getting bigger from here. This party is not going to last forever with the average age of the die hard fan likely getting older every season. So the time has come to maximize their revenues from the sport they feel like They Built.

$50-60 million a year isn't good enough for programs that put more than 90,000 fans in their stadium when NFL teams will each be getting over $300 million in their newest deal. They want $120-150 million a year, at least, coincidentally about the value OU and Texas each added to the Big 12's media deal based on what I've read. ESPN has probably told the Legacy Brands under its umbrella that to "fully realize their value" there has to be a painful consolidation. It has begun.

Add to that, if the Big 12 was to collapse not only would Texas and Oklahoma be off the hooked for the $160 million they would owe the conference but ESPN would be off the hooked for the reminder of the tv deal contract which is worth 1.6 billion dollars.

Bowlsby has done a lot wrong for the Big 12 but he is absolutely correct in taking this action against ESPN. ESPN doesn't give a F about the Big 12 so Bowlsby has nothing to lose.

The B12 and member schools should sue ESPN and the AAC. The AAC is just as slimy as ESPN. Both need to be taken down.

I love sports and watch most of anything except NBA. IF Bassey gets drafted and plays I will watch him but most other sports I watch on old school TV. My kids are 11 and 9 and neither one cares anything about watching sports. One is into gaming and other watches you tube and plays with fidget toys. I am telling you in 20 years most of these stadiums are going to be empty. My age and above is probably the cut off going to stadiums and watching sports. Just wait and see what it looks like in 20 years. Football is in trouble and baseball maybe extinct by then, so ESPN and all the major networks are double in trouble..

The AAC posters think they're in some type of power position with ESPN. Either they are really naive or they truly don't understand that whatever chances the AAC had of luring a team or two from the Big 12 is now completely ruin because of ESPN.

Simply hilarious!

This would save espn over a billion dollars over the next four years since they would not have to pay the current BIG 12 contract. Bowlsby claims "tortious influence". A legal term for intentional interference with contractual relations.

This second story "broke" about 11:00 p.m. Central tonight (Wed.).

Best sources for this are CBSsports.com or Stadium.

If they'd forced the hand of any P4 conference to do this it probably would have been over before anybody caught them. Using the AAC to poach the Big12 was a pretty bonehead move. The first guy says no, wtf, and then blows the whistle on them.

The only way ESPN can save any face now is if they force the SEC to hold off taking Texas and Oklahoma for 4 years so they get some return on their investment in the Big12 and then not renew any media rights with the Big12 at that time. Which is probably what they're doing right now. And they're still going to pay out the nose if this lawsuit pans out.

This is racketeering. They can trace these moves back to the previous alignment. People will have to testify. We all know it happened to get rid of the Big East and then had the basketball schools take the name and run so they didn't have to honor that agreement, either, without the premiere Big East football and basketball schools. The AAC was born of Satan's seed, lol.

Yep, go to the ACC and convince them to take a couple B12 schools and it would have worked without a hitch. But they were greedy and tried to force a move that didn't make sense.

That changes things a bit. If your taking all 8 teams—nobody is being left behind and damaged. Your basically proposing a merger. I’m pretty sure proposing a merger is not torturous interference. I could see FOX having a better case than the Big12.

I’m curious how much money ESPN was putting on the table for this merger. I would think it would take a lot of ESPN’s money to get all 8 big 12 leftovers to join the AAC.

Openly proposing and colluding are not the same thing.

11 and 7 here, and it’s the same basic story. Pro sports and college sports are essentially non-existent in their lives. My wife is into the Olympics, so they have watched some of that the past few days. But that’s it.

End badly for the Big 12? You don't think OU and Texas leaving is bad for the Big 12?

ESPN with the assistance of Texas has screwed the Big 12 at every turn and Bowlsby allowed it to happen. Now Bowlsby is growing a nutsack which is probably too little too late.

As for the AAC and SBC prospering under ESPN, the reason those two conferences are prospering is because they are winning games against good to great P5 teams which bring them national attention while CUSA teams has struggle to beat average P5 teams.

RE: Sh!t just got real!
ESPN typically gets what they want. Seems they wanted TX and OK to move. They also knew they would then be paying too much for the rest of the B12, and with that money the B12 would be attractive to teams like Houston, BYU, Boise and Cincy... thereby staying alive. They want the B12 to fold so they can get out of paying them what they owe. So they reached out to the AAC and offered to help them persuade the B12 remnants to move there, and if they did, they would pay the AAC more... not nearly as much as the B12, but certainly more. So it would be a win/win for ESPN and the AAC, while screwing over the remaining members of the B12. If I were in the American, Id be thrilled at the possibility of adding higher profile members and making more money, so I can see why they would go along with the shady plan. Hopefully this all coming out will save the B12, and get them to add the teams they should, thus restoring some sense of order to this. I just want a completely reorganized G5, G4 or G6 when this is all said and done. ESPN could save face and simply tell the B12 who to add and pay the old teams what they owe for the next few years, and the new teams an adjusted rate.

Hard to recruit without media exposure. Hard to win without good recruits. ESPN is the king maker. They could make Tx State the next Boise State if they wanted to. All they have to do is air every game on a linear outlet and pay them.

I'm a person that has a TV in every room in my home and garage and patio and over the past few years if its not college football or basketball. I hardly watch TV. If you asked me 3 years ago would I ever be without cable/Directv I would bet the farm...no. I dropped it all 6 months ago and dont miss it. Now I will pick up a streaming service end of Aug.

The world is changing and changing fast and like you said...20 years from now, maybe sooner. Those of us 40 or over will be left behind unless we change with it. Fight it all we want...

its going to change. Already happening

+3

Even with the SBC and mac ON ESpn and CUSA on facebook and twitter...

if you look at 247 recruiting ratings CUSA is out recruiting both and its actually increased. Like you said the problem is ....winning OOC games vs schools that are rated higher. But its easier to blame someone else than to look into the mirror and have the real problem looking back at you.

If CUSA HAD 2 or 3 ranked (FB/BB) teams year in year out it cures most problems
