Originally we were told it was Cinic and BYU but then the anti gay backlash killed that.

Then we were told that the Texas delegation made Houston the replacement. Rice was tossed in there to appease some politicians but it wasnt serious.

There was significant talk about the Big 12 going into Florida. Debate was to either take 2 or take UCF and another. The name that shocked me was Tulane was on the list. Market and Academics.

We were straight up told that Memphis was not in the discussion. Who was blocking them was up for debate.

Its interesting to hear the different perspectives and what was being said to whom.

I honestly think they never intended to expand and did the entire thing to entice espn. They then went and told a bunch of people what they wanted to hear.

ESPN has been planning this since 2016. The AAC was always where they wanted to move the less desirable teams of the Big 12. Cost saving measure.

So the Tulane prospective...Our current AD Troy Dannen was as UNI before he was here and has deep ties in Iowa where Bowlsby is from it has been conjectured they are good friends. Dannen is also close to the Iowa State AD(we currently have a home and home scheduled with them). Dannen or the President is also close with the fromer OU AD or Admin. ( this is evidenced by us getting OU to come play in New Orleans at our cozy little stadium this year).

So in short OU, ISU, and Bowlsby at least were very interested in Tulane. Tulane was probably not a top pick, but we were serious in there somewhere.

Makes sense. Tulane has been on the Big 12s list before. Way back in the day, the Big 12 had deep talks with Air Force. I remember that Tulane was considered back then.
People laugh when I talk about academics and their importance. Tulane being AAU is a BIG draw. I mean look at Rutgers… no real modern success but they had AAU and a big market.
If tulanes market was top 10, they would have a lot of options.

RE: What happened in the last realignment fiasco
So Memphis was told they were invited when Big 12 expansion didn't actually happen.

Congratulations?

I think you are not wrong, and all this past stuff is irrelevant to today's expansion drama.

They went around and indicated to a lot of schools that they had a chance. This really drove the story and honestly I think its how Bowlsby played ESPN... and they haven't forgotten.

Bowlsby actively bent over ESPN during that time and pissed off dozens of administrators. He lied to everyone.

Our former AD said at one point he thought that USF would be a part of 4 teams going. The four he said were Houston, Cinci, USF and UCF. That only lasted about 48 hours.

This is why I dont argue against what people heard. I believe them because Ive talked to so many with solid sources that it became evident that Bowlsby was lying to everyone.

Bullseye!

Except us...

The bolded gets overstated.
Back in 2011, what AF AD Mueh said was: "We were approached by the Big 12, and I told them we're not a good fit for that conference. ...I can't do that to my kids, because they'll get beat up..."

There's a big gap between "approached" and "offered" and even bigger gap to "deep talks"
Big East talked to Army and Navy yearly for at least a decade before the overall environment changed such that we were ready to entertain it.

Here's ESPN's BigXII blogger at the time, David Ubben: "Unless others turned the league down, I doubt it ever would have progressed to the point of an offer, but it's always interesting to hear any decision maker speak frankly about how they see their institutions."

That's not the what the conversation is about. It's about teams saying we were not considered. That was false.

RE: What happened in the last realignment fiasco
This was posted on The ECU BYB site this morning. It was a proposed Super Conference 30 years ago (1990) that would’ve brought the Metro to 16 members. The college football landscape has changed so much since then.

You can believe it’s overstated if you want, but when a power conference specifically talks directly to ONE school…. Not a pageant, not a national search but a target one on one conversation about a teams interest… that’s not small.
The Big 12 didn’t reach out to talk about interest before they did a bunch of leg work.
Then remember that Air Force was on the short list again in 2016.

All three academies have big value. If the New Big 12 is smart, they take Air Force…. And Navy.

The crumbling Big East also reached out to Air Force during the Fall of 2011, after Pitt and Cuse had left. Air Force wasn't interested, IIRC because they felt (correctly) that the Big East was ... crumbling.
