Refreshing change
So major realignment news and the Big East board is silent! After all that has happened over the past several years how good does that feel?

RE: Refreshing change
And this is one of many reasons why the C7 was correct in the decision to separate from the football schools. The Big East now controls its own destiny and has symmetry in direction and leadership. No one has one foot out the door (even UConn) because the Big East (for each of its members) is the top of the mountain in regards to conference affiliation. We have both the luxury of being in a power basketball conference, and the reassurance that the league is at zero threat of being pulled apart ever again. It is quite a safety net to have.

I do have great empathy in regards to the unknown futures of members in the Big 12, trickling down to the AAC, C-USA and Sun Belt. It is not a positive or healthy frame of mind to be in, especially with so many sports fans of those programs. We lived through that before and it is not fun at all. Hopefully, there is a resolution of some sort in the coming days, weeks and months ahead for the next decade (at least) of alignment.

RE: Refreshing change
could this developing mega conference idea lead to a situation where schools like BC, Wake Cuse etc are left out? If they formed a new conference would they be interest from either side to have a hybrid that could lure Villanova, Georgetown and/or st johns?

The money wasn't there from the networks for a best of the rest hybrid in 2011. Programs like UConn, Rutgers, Louisville, Cincinnati and USF were unable to command the monetary value necessary to pair with the C7 and keep that model moving forward among the likes of Memphis, Houston, SMU and UCF (and Navy). A hybrid conference with BC, Wake, Syracuse (and whatever leftovers remain) - schools with less alumni, enrollment and brand values - will suddenly compel Big East members to move over and get in bed with football schools (again)?

Being in the Big East has helped Villanova compete annually for national championships. UConn has taken a big step forward with recruiting and fan interest returning to the Big East. For Georgetown, they were one of the drivers of separating from the football schools in 2012.

The Big East is well compensated (and looking to increase its payout). There is little threat of schools leaving any time soon.

If anything, if left out, schools like Syracuse, BC and Wake would be more interested in joining the Big East than starting yet another best of the rest conference.

i understand and you make valid points. Would this time be diffeernt since the elites will have separated themselves from the rest?. Would the gap be great enough

Eventually, I believe so. For the elites, I also think there will be a time (after they make a ton more money than the rest) where the inability of most to have competitive, winning seasons results in another realignment cycle. This will lead to the next shift where more teams are likely added to help balance the revenues with winning and on-field success.

In the end, realignment is never over.
