The Mountain West didn't have any of those either. Forming a new coference is not an impossibility.

I'd agree with you but the CFP contract is the difference. Why would the current signatories allow a new one at renewal? ASUN can't force their way in. No reason to allow a legal entity that's not a current member to sign on at a contract renewal.

ESPN/SECN trying to put this out into the universe to introduce a prisoner's dilemma to the SBC.

SBC together strong.

That would leave 6 AAC, 10 SBC, and 14 CUSA schools with no conference being head and shoulders above the rest. How about we take those 30 schools, add in NMSU, and either Liberty or JMU to give us 32 teams. Then make two 16 team conferences with four pods each as follows.

Western league
Pod 1: NMSU, UTEP, UTSA, Tx State
Pod 2: Tulsa, UNT, SMU, Rice
Pod 3: Ark. State, LT, UL, ULM
Pod 4: Tulane, USM, USA, Troy

Eastern League
Pod 1: Temple, Marshall, ODU, Liberty/JMU
Pod 2: App, ECU, UNCC, CCU
Pod 3: GSU, UAB, WKU, MTSU
Pod 4: GS, USF, FAU, FIU

Go to ESPN as a group to work out a TV package.

Disclosure: I doubt this would ever actually happen, but it would make a ton of sense.

It won't surprise me to see the top 32, 40, etc. teams create their own version of the NFL-NBA and just run with it 15, 20 years down the line. The money they could make would be astronomical. We also know that protecting the best of the sport is no longer the intention. They could still schedule FBS teams but would be competing under one banner and multiple divisions vs multiple conferences and one organization. 8 pods of X teams. Use NFL and NBA style playoff.

The remaining FBS schools would then have the bowls + their own playoffs.

I think you are spot on with your take on where all this is headed. The only question really is how quickly will it come about.

So in this scenario students become faculty of the university? Likely highly paid faculty with all the rights and privilege's of an employee. Retirement, workers comp, FICA for private Us. The ability to unionize. Class action lawsuits for employee rights all over the place. That's a can of worms public universities not to mention private universities would be reluctant to open. If it does happen it'll likely turnout like the NBA. They'll get their arses handed to them every time they show up to play what should be a much inferior team from some country in Southeast Asia.

I meant the universities could earn, not necessarily players being paid. The NIL agreements would be nice though for those players.

My fear with moving to the AAC (should Marshall get an invite) would be that we would eventually end up in the same situation as we are currently. The leftover Big12 schools may stay temporarily, but eventually you can bet that they will get snatched up among the other P5 conferences eventually. So at first the AAC would lose, Houston, Memphis, UCF, and Cincy. Then when the rest of the original B12 moves on they will lose the rest of the decent AAC teams that didn’t get in the first time. Then it is back to square one all over again.

The best bet would be for Marshall and Southern Miss to head to the SBC and setup shop for good. Stop chasing this pie in the sky stuff. Get with like minded programs we have history with and fit culturally better with than the current CUSA. Oh, and getting a relationship back with ESPN would be a huge plus too.

Outside of Troy GS and App no one hears you. What's crazy is Marshall is by far the most attractive low hanging fruit out there and despite the slobbering crazed fans from these three programs dreaming of the annual beat down of Marshall crickets! These rivalries are deep and real yet Marshall seems to get this casual mention from so many. I don't get it.

Yeah, it is honestly crazy we are not in a conference with you all. The lines have been drawn now more than ever between the P5/G5, why do we keep chasing some delusion that we are “moving up”. They WILL NEVER LET US IN! History is repeating itself! It literally drives me crazy. Fool me once……

We need to hunker down with those we hate the most and that's everyone in the Sun Belt for GS fans plus Marshall and let the rest chase rainbows. Marshall brings the bling and picks one more to join them and we're done.

Had to bump this post. Klak is the real deal and rarely post unless he has some meaningful crap. This is meaningful. Take a look at this and assume we're adding Marshall. I'd add USM anyway! They fit our culture and with the competition there's no way they'll sit on the side lines.

I can tell you one reason that any C-USA would jump at the chance to join the AAC, even if there is only 1 current AAC member left. Its dumping our current commish for theirs. Judy sucks. Aresco at least tries.

Add Marshall and Southern Miss. and call it a night. In a dream world replace ULM with Tech but don’t see that happening.

With a mass exodus of the AAC, Aresco might pitch a fit and leave also. It makes sense for the AAC to make quick invites and bring in who they can. It does NOT make sense for schools to immediately and blindly say okay and move over. As a Marshall poster earlier said…the AAC could be a CUSA 3.0 trap very soon.

What concerns me is if the AAC wises up and goes after teams with history over teams in markets. That could screw the entire G5 up.

I'm with many of you guys. Let's just bring in Marshall and either Southern Miss or UTSA (just for you Texas State) and call it a day. The Sun Belt would ascend while other conferences devour each other. I'd think that most of App Nation would welcome Marshall into the belt.

What happens if the Big XII goes away? I'd be shocked if there weren't numerous clauses in the contract dealing with such things.

We can’t invite anyone. Schools have to apply. No one is going to move to consolidate CUSA/Sunbelt until after Big12 and AAC make their moves. People saying the Big12 is done. I don’t think they are done yet. WV may be the weakest link but I don’t see much value to the ACC or BIG10 to rescue any of the remaining 8 schools. The only key property on the table of value is ND and there is no motivation for them to change.

That means the most logical scenario is backfilling Big12 with the best programs available (BYU and 3-4 AAC) and then the AAC following suit.

Any G5 school presidents and executives not reaching out to the AAC or Big12 should be fired for dereliction of duties.

RE: SEC network saying Big 12 has 4 teams in mind
In my mind, the only question is how big a move will the Big12 make? Will they only grab 2 teams? (Not likely, because there are not 2 schools available to replace what they lost). Grab 4 and go back to 12? (Most likely, since there are enough quality properties that are stronger than some of the remaining members). Or, do they expand the footprint and go to 14-16? (Again less likely due to diminished returns of far away programs like Boise). How much damage the Big12 does to the football landscape will determine how this all effects conferences like the MWC, SBC, and CUSA.

Yes schools have to "officially" apply, but it's naive to think these discussions aren't going on prior to. Texas & Oklahoma "officially" applied to the SEC just the other day, but as we all know this has been going on behind the scene for weeks. No way either of those applies unless they know it's a slam dunk they're being accepted.

Of course! I’m directly responding to the notion that “we should just add Utsa and Marshall and be done with it”. It doesn’t work that way officially or unofficially. No school is going to have a serious discussion with the SBC until it’s clear what’s happening in conferences above them.

The AAC has 0 teams in the top 10 and 1 team in the top 25.
C-USA has 3 teams in the top 10 and 4 teams in the top 25.
The MAC has 1 team in the top 10 and 4 teams in the top 25.
The MWC has 1 team in the top 10 and 7 teams in the top 25.
The Sun Belt has 3 teams in the top 10 and 6 teams in the top 25.

Had to bump this post. Klak is the real deal and rarely post unless he has some meaningful crap. This is meaningful. Take a look at this and assume we're adding Marshall. I'd add USM anyway! They fit our culture and with the competition there's no way they'll sit on the side lines.

This list also shows, how the Sun Belt could stay intact and even add strength if if he AAC were to back fill with winning/market combination. back filling with #4 Buffalo, #8 Army, #5 UAB, to get back to 10 and #6 Liberty if army stay indy. also, will the AAC be happy at just 10 or want to get to 12?
