Way too early starting five prediction
With E gone and the portal not a factor anymore I think our day one lineup is easier to predict. Injuries aside I see us going with experience so our front line is Telfort, Doherty and Strong. Walters is one guard and who knows who the other guard will be. Probably depends on who shines this summer. Then the new guys slowly earn time and work there way into the starting lineup.

I don't think it's set in stone that Strong and even to a certain extent Shaq are going to start over the newcomers. I can see those two easily having their minutes decline.

McClintock is going to start at PG. Coen's not giving Randriasalama the keys to the Ferrari just yet. Scott-Grayson started most of his games at UAB. Now as a 5th-year player he's coming off the bench? Not sure about that.

If Pridgen gets a waiver to play this season, he's starting. It's as simple as that. Strong's coming off the bench again. Djogo is a better overall player than Strong too. So he's a candidate to start or get more minutes.

Nwagha is also an X-factor in all of this IMO. I can see him getting some good minutes if he's made improvements to his game this summer.

I will admit, Coen has some decsions to make...

RE: Way too early starting five prediction
It was a bit of a cop out not to name my fifth starter. I'm saying it will be Grayson. So there's my five.

If any of the new guys are clearly better then they will move ahead of the returning guys but the disadvantage they have is the initial lack of chemistry. It's also difficult to tell a starter like Strong that on day one you're losing your job to the new guy iF it's a close call.

Anyway, it's fun to take a stab at who the starting five will be. You mentioned a lot of players. Who are your starting five as of now?

RE: Way too early starting five prediction
If Strong sees how good Pridgen and Djogo are it won't be hard to take his minutes away as a starter.

I don't have a feel for a starting five honestly. Throwing sh&t on the wall, I guess could be...

McClintock, Scott-Grayson/Shaq, Telfort, Pridgen (if eligible), Doherty.

McClintock, Scott-Grayson/Shaq, Telfort, Pridgen (if eligible), Doherty.

Time will tell if the new guys can prove themselves clearly better based on preseason practices oe if they will have to prove it in actual games.

That's six players. I'll cross off Shaq off your list since you posted earlier that you couldn't see Grayson coming off the bench. (narrowing it down to five isn't easy....but the thread's challenge was...."name the opening day starting five.")

I would be happy if you are correct because it would mean that the incoming talent is overwhelmingly better than the returnees.

ONE question...what is the Pridgen eligibility isue. the previious transfer?

Pridgen is a second transfer. His first was going from Holy Cross to UNCW.

So he needs to get approved for a waiver by the NCAA to be eligible this season.

RE: Way too early starting five prediction
Just had another thought on this. The Portal. This past year a lot of teams lost a bunch of players. We are one of the teams that didn't. So, after guys like Strong and Shaq show loyalty to NU are we less likely to repay that loyalty , on day one, by giving their starting jobs to new guys? Or do coaches give them every chance to defend their spots as starters?

RE: Way too early starting five prediction
Wiz was saying he agreed with the notion that the guys who showed loyalty will get the nod as starters if it’s a close call over a newcomer

It is interesting. Seems like we have 8 guys in line for the 5 spots. I hadn’t thought about the loyalty factor. That is very real. So I agree, Shaw and Strong will have to be beaten out of their jobs, which could happen. But the transfers may have come in with promises and/or expectations. I’d guess Coen reminds guys that who starts the game has no correlation to who gets big/late minutes. Look how many times that happened last year. It will also come down to who can accept and perform in the bench role. My head tells me Djogo may be that guy. So I’d guess the 5 will be Chris/Shaq/Pridgen/Telfort/TSG (with Strong maybe getting the nod over Pridgen) but who knows

I’d guess the Pridgen waiver is just a formality, right? I know the NCAA handed them out by the dozen today

35.......why is it so hard to get you guys to pick your five? Is it Strong or Pridgen to start the season?

Strong. Strong. Strong. Or maybe Pridgen :) Actually, I think Strong will start since I feel Coen gets a good read on him early in games. At least I've convinced myself I do

Okay. I've got your five. I get that narrowing it down to five is difficult but it's what Coen has to do before every game. He can't go to the refs before a game and say, "I can't decide between Shaq and Grayson so I'm starting six guys tonight."

Have we forgotten Stucke started every game he appeared in last year.

No. But this season he's likely going to be one of last year's starters who will lose his spot. Plus he didn't have a great freshman year.

Then again, if he makes a big jump in the offseason he possibly could keep it.

We'll see...

Feel free to post your opening day starting five....and include Stucke if you think he should be there.
