RE: 2023 EMU MBB Recruiting Thread
I worked with a combo 6'6" SG-SF last summer. Played against Next year NC and Duke ( rated 3rd best in US) signees, and out-shot both.

He decided to play at post-graduate HS in PA this season. He's a deadly shooter. In first game he scored 25-points on 7 made three's, 5 Rb's, , 1-steal, and one block shot. EMU interested in him. I will recommend EMU, but expect him to get big-time offers.

With former top recruits like Noah and Emoni, we are getting a big head at EMU. 03-lmfao

Has D-I hoops now turned to transfers as their Plan A targets and high school/JUCO as Plan B? (even as we move away from the pandemic stuff with free years and players utilizing it to do grad work elsewhere).

Steve I honestly think that would be the most cogent strategy for EMU. Why sign an extremely raw Moe Njie and develop him, when you might get a Noah or Golson with their transfer wings clipped?

Let's be clear here, JT4 and Ray Lee both would have been one and done at EMU with the current transfer rules.

I've wanted to text about recruiting for some time, but haven't. You've given me an opening.

Your point about colleges now preferring transfers being the main focus is tight-on.

As college coaches love players that have proven their potential or worth. Some coaches really don't trust even if they're good that HS players can help immediately .

From my observations, big time college coaches want to see HS players put the ball in the hoop. More discerning coaches mainly from smaller programs, will sign players that they consider to be diamonds in the rough. Players that are athletic but make less of their shots, but that coaches can project making more of their shots with proper coaching that that the players have not received in HS.

On a separate note, since I've worked with HS bb players, I can say with confidence there are players out who are terrific players but remain under the radar because they play for smaller HS's whose competition is less sub-par. Coaches are put off by that. Not me.

For if I see a player who can get separation on his jump shot or drive that's good enough for me.

As an example, I went to a HS all-star game and before the game, I initiated a conversation with a 6 foot, skinny kid suiting directly in front of me who was to play in the game. He told ne he went a small HS in th farm country and had no college offers. Said he averaged 16 ppg and shot 42 percent on three's.

As he took the court, I kept my eye on him. In pre-game warm-ups he took 15 or so jump shots and missed but two of them. They both went in and out. In the game, he shot 5-5 from the field, including shooting 3-3 on three's. His ball handling was good as was his defense. He was voted MVP for his team. No 4-year college coaches were present at the game.

I spoke to him afterwards and asked him to send me some video. On one he had 6 steals. He's going to play for a junior college this year. I intend to follow his career.

Early signing November 9-November 16. I don't expect us to sign anyone but the rest of the MAC will be interesting.

Here's an update on HS player mentioned above. He followed-up his 25 points in first game, including 7 three's, with a 34-point performance, 29-points coming in the the first-half that included 8-made three's.That's 29 points in just 16-minutes of play. In the two games, he shot 15-30 on three's. That's off the chats.

He followed that up with a 30-point game, including 7-three's. That's 22 made three's in just 3 games.

Now getting lots of interest from college coaches. Will keep you posted.

He just played this past weekend in 12- team national HS tournament held in Connecticut that had some of the best HS teams in the nation. In two games averaged close to 20 ppg. Was named the final day among top five players in the tournament.

RE: 2023 EMU MBB Recruiting Thread
Early signing period is now over. As expected EMU did not sign anyone in the early signing period. We were joined by Bowling Green, NIU and Buffalo who also didn't sign anyone. As mentioned the 2023 class in Michigan is solid class. However many instate players have signed to out of state schools, added an extra year in out of state prep schools and in state d2 schools are getting very nice talent this year. So here is how the other MAC schools did in the early signing period:

WMU-Michael Sulaka 6'9 Macomb MI Brandon Muntu 6'4 JUCO Triton IL
Kent St-Donovan Hunter 6'8 Westerville OH Lance Hayes 6'4 Akron OH
Toledo-Sam Lewis 6'4 Oak Park IL, Xavier Thomas 6'5 Birmingham MI Sonny Wilson 6'1 Pontiac MI
CMU-Bryce Easton 5'10 Detroit MI
Ball St-Mason Jones 6'7 Valparasio IN
Ohio U-Ben Nicol 6'7 Charleston W VA
Akron-Darrion Baker 6'8 Country Club IL Marvin Muslime-Kamali 6'6 Boston MA
Miami OH-Mekhi Cooper 6'0 Bolingbrook IL Elan Elmer 6'7 Covington KY Evan Ipsano 6'0 Cincinnati OH Jackson Kotecki 6'9 Chicago IL Reece Potter 7'0 Lexington KY

It will be interesting to see if Mo asks to comeback if he averages 2-3 ppg and under 10 mpg.

Under a Luckyone post with a Miggy reply:

I posted that as of 12/11/2022 our Pf /Cs have TOTALLED 7 block shots. Our leading shot blocker is Emoni.
Bottom line: Forget the PG, SG, etc. we need GAME READY center who is a rim defender and can score say 7 - 9 ppg.

I would be shocked to see us take a verbal from a perimeter player until we fill our donut hole, center.

You are a recruiting savant Man!

That said, let's not get carried away about Njie, he was hardly DaShonte Riley. He had all of THIRTY blocks last year, even Nate Scott had 22 and shorty Spottsville had 16.

Don't get me wrong, I wish we had a 6'10" leaper but our base problem in giving up shots near the basket is that we often get beat off the dribble and nobody sags to help which results in way too many uncontested layups. I've never seen a man-to-man defense like ours, everyone is totally focused on their man and simply watch as their teammate follows his man to the basket for the layup. There is simply no help.

I'm starting to question the foot speed and just basic athletic agility of this team. Noah is quick and so is Lovejoy. Other than that, I don't see anybody on this team with the basic physical gifts of speed and hops like Tim Bond, Ty Groce or for that matter Darion Spottsville. Were Acuff, Geeter and Billingsley all very good HS players that simply did not have the goods to compete in the NCAA? They would not be the first. Just wondering. I simply cannot believe that Stan Heath could have such a horrible defense.

The HS player I previously mentioned scored 26-points in the first-half, and finished tonight's game scoring 38-points. Was 7-11 on three's. In his previous game, he scored 22- points on 11 fga's against a top HS team. He's averaging 25-ppg.

RE: 2023 EMU MBB Recruiting Thread
Had an amazing day yesterday.

As a HS player named Prince who plays with a player I give individual lessons to drove 50 miles for a lesson. He's 6'4" or 6'5", plays forward, but just plays 15 minutes in most HS games. He averages but 2 points per game as he hardly ever shoots. He's both strong and quick with very good handles.

He started off shooting ok but with a little tweaking of his form he started to shoot the lights out from all over of the court. His hesitation and cross-over drives to the hoop were impressive. He starting making shot after shot from all over the court. Other in the gym stopped what they were doing. walked over, and were mesmerized as much as I was.

He should play in the backcourt. Anxious to see how he plays when he returns to school after the holidays. I feel strongly he's going to be a big-time player as he has the athletic and bb IQ tools to do so. His initials are PM. If Will keep you posted.

I'm very privileged to get to coach such gifted players.

Since this is a recruiting thread, I must say I have seen many excellent gifted bb players playing under the radar at both big and small HS's that aren't being recruited as they get little exposure.

RE: 2023 EMU MBB Recruiting Thread
The player I coach and have texted about is Aaron Davis. He's a 6'-6" SG/SF. He attends Scotland Prep in Pennsylvania and plays for their First Love team.

Last night, he scored a whopping 59-points including shooting 77.2 percent on three's (17-22) Davis was on fire from the get-go as in the first 12 minutes he made 12 three's (e6 points). That has to be the most points scored in the beginning of a HS game. In two other games, he scored more than 25-points in the first half.

He's among the top HS shooters in the nation. Some of his highlight videos can be found on his Twitter account.

Interesting article although it’s outdated (2019) but supports what Steve has said about lack of talent in Michigan.
