As I perused the thread about whether the quarterback transfers would help our conference, it reminded me of all the discussion about whether the new transfer rule would help or hurt the G5. So where do some of you think we stand right now?
Based on who may have transferred in or out of your respective football programs so far, do you feel things have worked in your favor to this point or the other way around? Sunny? Cloudy? Storms? Sunny but in a drought? lol

So far, the transfer portal has worked out much better than I anticipated. As you probably know by now, LA Tech has acquired (by my count) 15 new players thru the portal. Furthermore, I've been told by a personal "insider" that LA Tech's new QB Kendall Austin isn't in Ruston to ride the pine. He's at Tech to START and PLAY football games.
If Austin has ANY thoughts or dreams about playing at the next level, then he knows he needs a very big year at LA Tech. For him and LA Tech, it's got to be "Balls to the Walls" this year. Austin needs a "Jeff Driskel" kind of year. Also, unlike most young football "recruits", Austin gave up a lot to be here. He had a new apartment in Dallas and a very good full-time job with a large pharmaceutical company, and more. He gave it all up, because he WANTS to be here.
Oh, there's still a chance Austin could be a bust. But honestly, Tech had no QB options this year anyway, so the gamble is minimal. Louisiana Tech couldn't ask for a better game changing opportunity than this.....thanks to the transfer portal.

Tech has been lucky at this with Jeff Driskel and Ryan Higgins. Western also got lucky with Mike White. But a lot of it is the system these players are transferring into. Ty Storey was another QB that played well in CUSA. He looked like the worse QB on the field in the Spring Game. But the guy had the drive...I will not lose this game. Not the best talent but that drive to win was off the charts...
but you never know because there are just as many PIGGYS out there. Dont wish that on any team...other than Marshall

Just so we're clear, Ryan Higgins was not a transfer to LA Tech. He was home grown, and spent 5 years in the LA Tech Program, becoming CUSA Player of the Year in 2016.
In addition to Florida transfer Jeff Driskel (2015), you're probably thinking of Iowa transfer Cody Sokol, who came to LA Tech as a senior in 2014. Sokol surprised us all by passing for 3,436 yds and 30 TD's, and led Tech to a win over Big 10 member Illinois, in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

I would say the G5 are going to get P5 sophs and juniors that didn't get the expected playing time at their respective schools most of the time, which is fine. Doesn't really harm the P5 on a program level.
The P5 are going to get our starting seniors that we've invested a lot of time and money in most of the time, which is not ok. Keeps us in a constant state of rebuild every year, losing the graduating class AND losing the best incoming seniors to the portal. We will be perpetually young and inexperienced once they figure out how to most effectively exploit this policy.
Best case scenario is the P5 cannibalize each other and start pointing fingers over suspected violations and then do away with this mess and go back to sitting out a year as a penalty for transfer. That takes seniors, with no redshirt to burn, off the table. They can still move as a graduate transfer if they choose a major that isn't offered at their current school. That protects the investment of the school, especially with NIL as an incentive to go to a bigger well known school/conference.
