WVU moving Soccer to CUSA
On Monday,, Conference USA announced the addition of West Virginia University as an affiliate member for the sport of men’s soccer. The Mountaineers will begin play in C-USA for the fall 2022 season.

I am surprised that WVU decided to be in the same conference with Marshall.

I'm actually not. Schools will make moves with their Olympic subsidy sports they would never do with their big money sports. Heck, they will do things with their break-even sports they wouldn't do with their big money sports ... for instance, Notre Dame Hockey joined the Big Ten.

When the MAC was at 5 full members playing soccer, it offered stability for WVU, because WVU on its own assured MAC soccer of 6. When the MAC dropped down to 4, so that WVU was in a conference that would always need an affiliate in addition to WVU for a bid into the championship. SIU-Edwardsville leaving to a new multi-sport conference that sponsors soccer would only have put a highlight and an underline on that issue.

So this is the second shoe dropping from the announcement of GA State and Georgia Southern affiliating with the MAC ... this was why the MAC needed to look for a pair of affiliates, and not just one.

Any reason behind why more MAC schools aren't sponsoring soccer? Seems like it wouldn't be too expensive (relatively speaking).

I assume Title IX makes it tough to make work. Really glad BGSU sponsors it.

CMU had a team but the program was nuked in the early 90's, quite the party animals and got into a lot of trouble. was a freshman in 94 and was going to try out but program was dissolved in 93.

title IX has definitely hurt

womens lacrosse, golf, soccer added within last 10yrs or so without a new mens sport.

Yeah, mostly Title IX. The reason so many FBS schools sponsor women's soccer is that it helps fill out the women's scholarships to offset the 85 headcount men's football scholarships ... but then if you have a men's soccer team, even if they don't have as many FTSE, they still offset part of the FTSE of the women's team.

Meanwhile, for just meeting the sports minimums, an FBS school only needs basketball and FB as men's teams sports, so sponsoring baseball is already one step beyond NCAA minimums.

Title IX means there's a bit of a trade-off between sponsoring lots of men's team sports and sponsoring men's track (CC / IT&F / OT&F) and wrestling.

Mac Men Team Sports / Total Men's Team Sports / Men's Track? / Wrestling?:

BGU: 4 / 5 / CC only / No
WMU: 4 / 5 / No / No

Akron: 4 / 4 / T&F only / No
BSU: 3 / 4 / No / No
Miami: 3 / 4 / CC & OT&F / No
NIU: 4 / 4 / No / Yes
-----------------------------------
CMU: 3 / 3 / CC Only / Yes
EMU: 3 / 3 / Yes / No
KSU: 3 / 3 / Yes / Yes
Ohio: 3 / 3 / CC only / Yes
Toledo: 3 / 3 / CC Only / No

Buffalo: 2 / 2 / Yes / Yes

As you can see, nobody at or above the "four men team's sport" line has a full three season men's track program, half don't have men's track at all, only one has indoor track and field, and only one school wrestles.

Meanwhile, at or below the "three men team's sports line", all run cross country, four out of six wrestle, and three out of six have a full three season track program.
