I really, really like Brant. He covers UNCW better than anyone, but I wasn't sure where he was coming from most of this weekend. On Saturday, @ing D1Baseball asking why they still had NU as their projected CAA rep, to complaining about people talking about UNC's chances at an at-large bid, and then complaining about a bang-bang play at first. Maybe he was just amped up with the excitement from the tournament, but I haven't seen that homer side of him in the past.
This play was too close to complain about and if that is the worst call that went against us, the umps weren't a factor.
Appreciate it, and I'm hopeful we can write better + deeper stories for 2021-22 as we find more contributors. I think COVID kind of torpedoed this past year and kept people from getting involved. We've got some good momentum going into the next year, and hopefully, that will attract a few students that really want to pursue this.
re: last weekend's homerism, I'm still working out what I want the Perch to become. I have what I hope are some cool ideas for things that we can accomplish with it that go beyond just writing stories. At the core, with whatever it becomes, writing factual, non-homer stories are what we're going to do.
With that said, what role and voice can we have with social media? My goal in all of this is to have fun, and hopefully in some way, help UNCW athletics and UNCW athletes. Sometimes, I think that means advocating for us and having a little fun with what we're posting there, whether that be poking the rivals, trying to remind the national outlets who we are and so on.
That's still a work in progress in figuring out exactly what our style is going to be. Bottom line, though, is that everything will always be done in the name of getting UNCW recognition.
We're never going to get the attention of ACC programs, but it is a bit exhausting to check out D1 or BA that Saturday morning, and see they're more focused on UNC maybe squeaking into the tournament rather than a REALLY GREAT final in the CAA.
Anyway, as always, thanks for reading. I didn't realize just how much fun I'd have with doing this and it's given me great balance now that I have a 9-to-5 that isn't in sportswriting.
