We gotta quit digging these holes. Overcoming them in the CAA is one thing but you're not going to win an NCAA regional constantly falling behind so much

The hole we dug this time was just awful pitching to start the game. Game was still close at 3-0 when we took out our starter. Next guy up walked three in a row, gave up a hit, and only got one strike on the three batters he walked, so he sat. We then gave up runs on wild pitches and a home run from the next pitcher. We were down 9-0 and UNC barely tried to get the runs, it was just walks and wild pitches. As soon as our pitchers just put balls over the plate, we stopped giving up runs.

We're lucky we got the bye in the CAA tournament so we may not have to move past our top three starters. No chance in hell we get an at large, so no reason to use our top three guys for anything more than short relief against Charlotte just to keep them warmed up.

Six walks with five of the six scoring. Six wild pitches, with five runs scored since they had runners on third.

At least the team competed last after giving it away. Hawks have had 3-4 guys step up lately that can come through in the clutch. That’s how you stay in the lineup.

Benton could be big moving forward if can continue to perform like last night. Striking out the side against a quality team is impressive. Hopefully he is over his injury now.

The most important thing that came out of that game is finding out that Cody Benton has recovered from his sore arm issues and is ready to contribute at a time where we most need it.
Also, we got to see even more of Marsh. He is showing why he is American Legion POY. We have struggled with having someone reliable hitting in the 2 spot until he stepped up.

Yep these were both huge! I couldn’t believe Cody was entering the game let alone dominated.

I’m not worried about falling behind so much in a game where our weekend starters weren’t involved. If that happens against Charlotte, ok, maybe some mild concern. But as long as we finish games strong...does it matter? Win any way you can.

Well, I suppose everyone knows what I am going to point to - two words - seven walks.
You just can't do that.

Would not worry about losing to Carolina there but this weekend they hopefully get solid starts and play fundamentally sound baseball going into the tournament. Marsh provided a spark last weekend but he has been inconsistent this season along with Ron Evans at the DH spot and that is where I think he should be. Noah Brides in CF is a huge asset to the OF even if he doesn't hit the ball great he makes game and run saving plays all most every game. The tournament is the route for UNCW and staying healthy is imperative for this team. They have not developed much out of the bullpen and that is a major concern and also puts more pressure on the starters to go deep into games.

The kid from Hanover has been good out of the pen and Chenault for the most part. Benton was very good last night and is very talented apparently.

CUSA.TV
$7 for a 24 hour pass or $11 for a month

If you skip today's game a 24 pass should cover Friday's games at 6PM and Saturday's game at 1PM

Baseball Preview: at #19 Charlotte

Seahawks and 49ers meet for first time since 2002

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNCW and Charlotte meet for the first time since 2002 as both prepare for the conference tournaments next week with a three-game series beginning Thursday at Hayes Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

The series continues on Friday with another 6 p.m. start and will wrap up on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Seahawks (29-18) are coming off a 14-9 loss at North Carolina on Tuesday. The Tar Heels were staked to a nine-run lead after two innings, but the Seahawks managed to cut it to a two-run deficit, 11-9, in the top of the eighth. Cole Weiss led the Seahawks with a season-high four runs batted in on two hits while Taber Mongero extended his hitting streak to seven games with a pair of hits and he drove in two runs. Brooks Baldwin also added two hits and became the first player since 2012 to have 10+ home runs and stolen bases.

The 49ers, meanwhile, split four games at Rice last weekend in their final Conference USA series of the season. Charlotte, in its second season under the direction of Robert Woodard, owns a 36-17 record and is 25-5 at home.

Brooks Field will serve as site of next week's Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament, which opens Wednesday. The Seahawks earned a first day bye after clinching the South Division title last weekend with a sweep of visiting Charleston. Northeastern, along with the Seahawks, will also begin play on day two after running away with the North Division title.

Brooks Field has returned to full capacity and session tickets are on sale here. Individual game tickers will go on sale next week.

We'll indeed be throwing Roupp, Smith and Gesell in the series as per usual.

So why not go ahead and sweep a big non-conference series? Who knows, it might just give us a backdoor shot at an at-large bid. We're only # 85 in the RPI at the moment, but a road sweep over the RPI # 20 team and a deep run through the conference tournament would do wonders for our resume.

RE: Baseball: @ UNC (Tuesday/6 PM) / @ # 16 Charlotte (Thursday-Saturday)
Also, per discussion on the W&M board I read, the 6 teams in the field are NOT locked in yet. Only the top 2 teams in each division received automatic bids. The last 2 spots come down a committee vote.

Those spots SHOULD go to Charleston/Elon (whoever finishes 3rd, with the 2nd place team getting in automatically) and W&M. But it's not a sure deal. The committee could easily put JMU in over W&M if they determine that W&M's winning % edge (.417 over .400) isn't as important as W&M ending up with so many more losses in league play than JMU (14 to 9) or some other silly criteria they make up.

The committee will consist of 3 people, including 2 administrators.

I kind of get WHY a committee was needed, as the north and south teams not facing each other requires a bit of subjectivity in choosing the teams. But if they don't put W&M in as the 6-seed, especially after the game resumption sh*t-show that just occurred, that would further confirm the clown shoes nature of this conference.

The league rules are clear in that, at least in a more ordinary year, winning % is supposed to trump everything else, and W&M has that edge, albeit a slight one. They could have easily just stuck with that instead of having a committee potentially mucking things up, and I doubt there would have been any issues.

I fully trust the committee to do something dumb like politically add an undeserving northern team.

I should have been more clear regarding the bullpen-Hodges and Chenault have been good most of the year against mostly weekend teams. Some of the guys have not really thrown enough in a short season to get better or know how they are in games right now. It seems like a fairly thin group of bullpen guys that have emerged as regulars.

Fully agree with this assessment. It's been a tough year to develop guys given all the many factors involved working against it. We have a high quantity of arms, thanks to all the talent carried over from last season's cancellation, but only a few truly trustworthy guys at the moment.

But as always, you never know when the lightbulb goes on for guys and they start to figure things out. Even in this final weekend or the CAA Tournament, someone else could easily emerge. Having both Benton's available is a big help.

Hawks up 2-0, bottom 2nd!

Weiss, who has been on fire, doubled in Marsh for the 1st run of the game in the 1st. In the 2nd, with runners on 1st & 3rd and 1 out, Mongero brought home the 2nd run on a SAC Bunt. THAT is exactly what we need to keep doing.
