UNCG this weekend
First off, this year has been difficult to know when they're playing. They've had a number of schedule alterations that I've missed. Next year I need to figure out other ways to find the alterations. I don't use Twitter, the website is hit or miss on last minute changes, can't figure out how to get the facebook notifications. This is just my public service announcement for those who consider going to baseball games. This weekend, I managed to catch all of Friday's game and game one of Saturday's double header.

Someone asked how I thought they'd do this year and I honestly said I have no idea, as I'm not smart enough to translate non-conference performance into conference performance. And I am no insider - I just have season tickets, go to the home games I can and scan the box scores on the away games. I saw some really good things in non-conference, but it turns out the Bucs are a middle of the pack conference team. Both pitching and hitting wise, overall they appear to be average or a little less than average; this is no statistical analysis, so you could easily argue otherwise.

Loyd seems to have been really solid as a starting pitcher, and I think he's getting some sniffs from the major leagues; yesterday it looked like someone from the Blue Jays' organization was there, although I could be wrong. He performed well Friday, allowing 2 hits and no earned runs. And Mr. Kirby finished off UNCG to close out the win.

Colby Stuart didn't pitch nearly as well Saturday. Some timely offense in the bottom of the fifth gave him a no-decision when Mercer started the sixth inning with the game tied 5-5. A decision to leave the pinch-hitting Richardson, who came through in the fifth with a two-RBI double, bit Mercer. Richardson, playing left field, dropped a fairly routine fly ball that probably would have got them out of the inning with no one scoring. I don't blame Kyle, though; I've never seen him play anything other than catcher and DH. Nothing is "routine" when you're playing out of position. UNCG scored two that inning and Mercer was left in to absorb the remaining UNCG runs and all but two remaining batters. I wonder what would have happened if they subbed a regular outfielder in for defense. That was a tough call as you'd love to keep Richardson's bat in the line up.

I missed game 3. It was 6-0 after 2 innings and it looks like the Buc offense just didn't have enough firepower to overcome that deficit.

Next week the Bucs are at Appy St Tuesday and at VMI for a 3-game conference series. The following weekend they are home for a conference series with Samford. And then the conference tournament follows.
