MAC winning the portal game
Lots of talk about the transfer portal, mostly about how it is bad for the college game. While not rehashing that debate, it looks like the MAC is gonna be a net winner when it comes to transfers. The amount of good players leaving vs players coming in shades in the MAC's favor. This is especially true if you discount a few high profile guys leaving the MAC who are graduating from MAC schools and only transferring because the NCAA gave them an extra covid year. I've added an asterisk by those below. This is not an exhaustive list, but I think pretty accurate.

Akron: OUT-Currie (not a contributor, transferring down a level), Marshall (bench guy who showed a few flashes), Reece (part time starter with skill limitations but great athleticism) Edwards (didn't play) IN-Castenada (well recruited pg from USF who played pretty well in a strong league and fits a crucial need for the zips) Walton* (proven MAC starter who adds a needed scorer). I'd add that the zips also signed a good freshman class and didn't overplay the transfer market. Net gain.

Ball St: OUT- El-Amin* (good pg who would have been done w college but using the extra year to play at Rhode Island) Coleman (all league caliber sg who is at his best when the primary scoring option) Gunn (bench player with shooting talent who never quite excelled and transferred down a level) Walton* (starter and good scorer who somehow has gained a 7th year of college eligibility and heads intra-conference to Akron) IN-Cochran (proven MAC starter who fills a scoring and ball handling need and has 3 years to play, intra-conference transfer from NIU). Net loss.

BG: OUT-Washington (inside bench depth guy) Ziegler (athletic backup guard who got beat out by the younger Fulcher for major bench minutes) IN-Curtis (major HS recruit headed to his 3rd school with 3 years to play, was a pretty good starter in the Valley, talented) Mills (top guy at low major Binghampton, 3 years to play, productive) Gordon* (scorer and ballhandler who was very good at Samford, using extra covid year). definite net gain.

Buffalo: OUT-Robinson (talented recruit who never played after legal issues and transferred to another mid major) Gallion (bench guy who had a few moments but didn't play much) IN (Jack, good A-10 player who should start at sg). Net gain and UB signed a good group of freshmen/juco players too.

CMU: OUT-lots in flux at CMU but it appears that guys leaving are Weekly-McDaniels (part time starter at pg) Murray (part time starter at sf) IN-nobody. net loss so far, but not as bad as it looked like it was gonna be, with a brand new coach there might be more changes in and out.

EMU: OUT- Lowder (talented pg and part time starter) Groce*(team's best overall player uses his extra year to head to the Big East) Morgan* (part time starter using his extra year) James (played some pg) Gibson (one EMU's better players). Net loss, but again with a coaching change this was expected and it may change if Heath brings in some quality transfers with more eligibility than guys who left.

Kent: OUT- Nuga* (best perimeter guy uses his extra 6th year to head to UNLV) Bennett (big kid who didn't play transfers down) Bainbridge (backup who struggled when given minutes transfers down) Jordan (backup scorer with some potential) O'neal (backup big who had success in certain matchups) IN- Carey (good all around A-10 pg) overall depends how you look at it. if you discount Nuga who was expected to be a 1 and done it's a gain as Carey is really good and allows them to play santiago as more of a 6th man instead of a full time pg. plus, expect kent to add a couple more transfers in.

Miami: OUT-nobody IN-Williams (shooter with size who had a few moments in the ACC and has 3 years to play. good addition which adds size to Miami's talented but short perimeter rotation) net gain for MAC's most stable roster.

NIU: OUT-Cochran (top player on a crappy team goes intra-conference to ball state) Beane (starter and son of former asst. coach) Mateen (backup guard who sat out most of the yr transfers down a level) Jones (backup guy with some talent but didn't play) Cole (backup big who didn't do much) IN-Osten (athletic PAC-12 big should be an upgrade in frontcourt rotation) Mitchell (highly rated local HS recruit comes home from Minnesota. didn't play much there but could flourish in the MAC) Hunter (well traveled kid who starred as a D2 freshman then was a Weber St backup. good size and potential in backcourt) Williams (pretty highly recruited local pg w size played as a frosh in AAC at Tulsa although he didn't produce a lot, probable new NIU pg). Net gain by a lot. NIU's roster is suddenly pretty big and more athletic.

Ohio: Out- Foster (gangly big who earned a few minutes off the bench) McMurry (end of bench guy) Miguel (bench rotation guy with some skill who didn't excel in his first D1 year) IN- Carter* (former OU starter and Xavier starter who makes frontcourt better) Net gain even though Carter only has 1 year. OU also used a transfer out scholarship to sign IJ Ezuma a really talented freshman big who had a lot of offers.

Toledo: Out- Komangum (long backup big was a hard worker but limited skill wasn't a good fit for UT offense) Maranka (home schooled kid never found a feel for D1 play despite good physical abilities and transferred down a level) Jones (covid opt out never played) Acunzo (talented backup with skill overcame foot problems to show potential, headed to Horizon RMU) Jackson* (MAC POY graduates from UT and uses his extra year to go to Arizona St and try to impress pro scouts. Wasn't expected to return) IN -Dennis (starting Boise St pg was a fairly highly recruited kid who had success in the MWC and should be an ideal backcourt partner to Rollins. Has 3 years to play) Net gain if you discount Jackson. About a wash if you don't considering Dennis has 3 years.

WMU: OUT: Holmes (backup who had potential but didn't play much. Wright (improving big man was a solid MAC center) Barrs (skinny backup big didn't look lost but didn't have much production) Boyer-Richard (backup guard w limited game) Emilian (backup forward had a few moments but should do better at a low major) Cruz*(backup guard had a disappointing sr year and uses the covid mulligan to play elsewhere) Lee* (solid starting forward uses extra yr) Wilkins (oft-injured forward with skill never did much due to injuries) Norman (part-time A-10 starter who can score and handle and should be a backcourt upgrade from Boyer-Richard and Cruz) McMillan* (muscular big with a nice 3 pt shot had success at Valpo but also injuries. if healthy should be a capable stretch 4 in the MAC) Hastings (pretty highly recruited athletic forward didn't play a lot of Butler but will get plenty of minutes at WMU to see if his big potential comes out) Net even with a possible gain if hastings game develops to match his athleticism. WMU has 3 scholarships open so they might add more transfers. There is also hope Lee may reconsider leaving.

When did the transfer portal become an encyclopedia...

RE: MAC winning the portal game
BG added 6'8" Joe Reece from ODU. 8 points, 5 rebounds in 25 minutes per game last year.

Edit, Gabe O'Neal xfer from Kent state joins BG.

I have no idea how we get these guys playing time. I gotta believe there must be some xfers out we have not heard about.
