Virginia Tech announces $400m athletic campaign
https://hokiesports.com/news/2021/4/20/g...paign.aspx

Quote:The Reach for Excellence campaign has five main pillars, which are:

A football enhancement fund to build a program that consistently competes at the top of the ACC, by allotting $30 million over time for recruiting, assistant coaches' salaries, quality-control coaches, player development, and capital needs.
Renovations to improve Cassell Coliseum, with at least $50 million to be raised privately.
The Drive for 25 initiative to increase Hokie Club membership to 25,000 and raise $20 million annually for student-athlete scholarships.
Striving for comprehensive excellence for all sports by providing operating expenses, facility improvements, nutritional and strength and conditioning programs, and more.
Increasing the number of student-athlete scholarship endowments to expand capacity to support students and broaden reach in recruiting.

$30m in straight up increased operational overhead and future unfunded liabilities to try to compete better in football on the base layers of the coaching tree.

$unknown and probably surprisingly large amount to being competitive in all sports on base levels of facilities and coaching.

$unknown and probably quite small amount to scholarship endowment to eliminate costs permanently.

Phrased in nole-speak ... this $400m donation drive will offset less than a decade of SECN money advantage. And aside from a renovation of Cassell nothing there was extravagant, relatively speaking, for the P5. It was all bread and butter stuff. $400m is a lot of cheese without a lot of flash or structural financial improvements. How do Hokie fans feel about Whit Babcock?

I like him. His non-revenue sports HC hires have been great! His men's basketball HC hires have been top notch but being a football first school it all comes down to the 1 hire.

I still like Fuente and think he's a good coach. The problem is he's a lousy recruiter and seller of the program. For the fans this is a make or break year for him but for the President and AD, their rhetoric sounds like their willing to give him time to build. So..... everything is on hold until we see how this upcoming season goes.

Ooh. IDK. Some fans will be calling for him, I think.

As for Fuente: the Hokies may be favored in as few as 4 games this year (highlighted below), so anything better than 6-6 is probably a good year.

Freeze is my first choice if Fuente can't get it done this coming year but I have no say in the matter. It would take a great HC away from a school that we're going to be playing almost every year for the next 10 years and he's used to winning in difficult situations. He makes $3 mil a year, so it would probably take $4 1/2 Mil to get him to move plus addressing funding issues for recruiting and other staff members.

There are plenty of VT fans that say he would never get an offer for the calling a prostitute on a work phone issue he had in Mississippi. I can forgive him for that as his family has done.

He seems to be Persona Non Grata by the SEC schools. Which is another reason to hire him in my opinion because, if they wouldn't hire him now, they probably wouldn't hire him if he's successful at VT either.

I believe in hiring a coach who's been successful in similar situations as ours and in second chances. Michael Vick got a second chance, I don't see why Hugh Freeze can't get one as well.

+2. I think this year will be Fuente’s last year. I cannot complain about VT basketball.

...or he wins 9 or 10 games and his seat cools off?

More likely 6 wins. Maybe 7 at max. He doesn’t recruit well.
