Heath's Second EMU Offer
It's refreshing to see EMU targeting Michigan kids.

'79 answers it above and it is addressed in the article: size. (I wonder if he is the B. Artis White of MI H.S. 2021).
https://www.mlive.com/highschoolsports/2...eriod.html
They said, ‘What are his weaknesses?’ He needs to get bigger.
Williams thinks Menifield’s size might make some schools reluctant.

He is definitely worth the risk.
Elite quickness and vision. Superb passer and dribbler. Seems to have a nice shot.
Earl Boykins 2.0?

During the Murphy era, many said that there wasn’t enough talent in Michigan to make in-state recruiting worthwhile.
As we’ve seen with Coach Heath’s first two offers, the talent is there. It’s always been there. You just have to make an effort to go find it.

His style of play reminds me a bit of Mike Davis' son at U of D. No I am not saying he is as skilled as Davis son but his playing style seems similar.

I don't want to get this thread off topic, but fishing in "Lake Michigan" (in quotes, so I don't mean the body of water) isn't too profitable these days. MI h.s. talent is way down (despite what Dr. Smith said earlier this week).
https://www.prephoops.com/2021-rankings/
I counted 3 but added one for Akins who transferred to the local prep school. I don't know if he actually played there.
So NONE of the top 50 and only 4 of the top 250 for the H.S. class of 2021 are playing h.s. ball in MI.
That's pretty weak for a state with significant population and basketball history.
Just a hypothesis, but if the h.s. class in your state is weak, mid majors in that state will suffer. UofM and MSU can recruit nationally. MAC schools need to be able to recruit MI, OH, etc. (i.e., regionally).
OTOH, look at Florida. I counted 10 of the top 50 from that state.
And compare the MI class of 2021 vs. 1991 (Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Voshon Leonard, Theron Wilson, etc.).
https://www.prephoops.com/michigan/
Or compare say the last 1/3 or 1/4 of the 20th century vs. 2000 - 14 (when this article was written). Absolutely amazing the talent Michigan h.s. USED to have (in the history books, I might add)

Steve it is painfully obvious that Michigan HS basketball has experienced a seismic decline, hell Tom Izzo was giddy when he signed Kithier and Loyer, two of my state's top prospects that really need to be playing in the MAC. You nailed it!
That said, the Cow once again makes a great point! EMU was never in the running for Webber, Rose, Magic, etc... Nate Oats did a great job at Buffalo recruiting those Michigan guys that the Power 6 did not want, like the Cow said, he made an huge effort to find it.

Exactly Jerry -- Nick Perkins was taken right out of our own back yard. There's no way he ever should have gone to Buffalo instead of us. Murphy did not care to scout locally.

Perkins was recruited by Nate Oats his former H.S. coach. Wasn't exactly a "fair fight". Oats was recruiting his former h.s. players. Perkins, Wes Clark, etc.
Here is what UB looks like now that Oats has been gone a few years. Do you see MI?
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basket.../_/id/2084
Bovine, this is college NOT a NBA draft. Can't say, "We didn't sign Player X because..." Because what? Players make out their minds for dozens of different reasons. UofM's big center, Dickinson, is from NoVa and went to school at DeMatha, in a D.C. suburb. He passed on G'town, Maryland, Virginia, etc. etc. Players decide where they want to go.
E.g., UofM's two best recruit this year are from Florida. The best recruit in the nation, from Minneapolis, MN is apparently headed to Gonzaga.

Bovine, do you realize that Boykins averaged something like 38 ppg in h.s. I'm not sure there is a Boykins 2.0 out there.
We haven't seen one in 25 years.

RE: Heath's Second EMU Offer
BTW, I checked with a Detroit paper (I have an online subscription).
Menifield is listed at 5' 9". The paper has him as #20 overall in MI and in the top 11 - 15 range of 2021 seniors.
