RE: Commissioner Gill appointed to NCAA Basketball Committee
Do you think they'll even know he's there?

I'm sure he's there to be seen and not heard.

Many of you are upset that he doesn’t promote the conference the way you feel that he should, and I think that’s valid - I’d like an Aresco figure as well, but what else does he currently do? He clearly has other responsibilities, that the member schools approve of him doing to still have a job.

The commissioner doesn't have a lot of powers but 2 big ones I can think of are negotiating bowl ties and promoting the league. We still don't have the bowls where we can get P5 matchups like CUSA even though they're a lesser conference from competitive standpoint and not better in terms of media rights value.

I also think more should've been at least said when App wanted to go to the Belk Bowl and got locked in with NOLA. And the sticking up for Coastal when they had a real case to get in the NY6 over Cinci was half-***ed if not nonexistent.

And even without that the fact that the Sun Belt presidents wanted him and the ADs were almost completely against him tells me everything I need to know. And there's his complete lack of radio interviews that Karl Benson at least did.

Also, check out this post from BoP. He's in a position to know,.

Good points and I agree!! We need to upgrade the bowl for our champ as well. Keep the Nola Bowl, but send our #2 team there instead of our #1.
If we can get a P5 for the Nola Bowl, and have our current bowl opponent be in our #2 bowl, I would be ok with that as well.

We no longer send our champion to New Orleans. ESPN has the first pick and sends them to the bowl of their choice (0f the bowls they own) New Orleans has the second pick.

A year and a half has passed since I wrote that post and much has changed.

First, an entire communications staff has been hired. I wasn't happy about the others being dismissed as I thought they were more than competent. And it took way too long to hire replacements. Here's hoping the new staff does a good job, especially as it pertains to social media.

The Commissioner has become more accessible. There were many requests for interviews in his first year that were declined. But he's much more approachable now. Those that were rebuffed need to make another effort.

They were understaffed for the basketball tournament because the new staff wasn't in place. But the signage around the venue was great...and so many public places asked "are you here for the tournament?" That question was rarely asked in Hot Springs and NEVER asked in New Orleans.

I still don't agree with the Commissioner's statement that he'd rather do his lobbying privately rather than in public interviews. But that's the choice he's made.

Overall, there has been, in my opinion, real improvement. Time will tell if there will be enough.

RE: Commissioner Gill appointed to NCAA Basketball Committee
Thanks for the insight BoP. Of course there were clear areas of improvement needed after Gill joined the conference. I feel that appropriate steps in the correct direction are being taken, too. Gill comes with decent experience from a good conference. Him showing he's willing to make drastic staff changes is proof he has listened to concerns from admins/fans.

The conference has just promoted some good people in areas I think will make a difference for all of our schools. But complaining about commissioners are in vogue now, I guess, so let the grumbling continue.

Well....do me a favor and tell me what he has done to make this a better conference. Asking for a close friend.

Got a better (and paying) city for the basketball tourney. Hired a completely new marketing staff. Cancelled the idiotic Pod-Play in basketball.

Don't know what more you would like him to do in the 22 month's he's been the commissioner.

Next time a member has done something no one else has done, being more visible would be a start.

Getting a new city for basketball would be the number one priority for a monkey. Nothing to chow about with this. And what has this NEW marketing staff done for the conference? The SBC will quietly slip away if we are depending on our commish for momentum. And there is no one out there dumb enough to take him off our hands. That is the really sad part. Expectations were low when he was hired so hell, he can't be fires for doing nothing.

Well he is at least smart enough to understand that no one knows you are sitting on your ass when private lobbying as opposed to public lobbying.
