Boom Shaka Laka
In the past 20 hours, Shaka Smart has flipped three recruits that were going to go to Texas for Marquette. One of the recruits, Joplin, is the very first Wisconsin recruit to sign with Marquette since Joey Hauser in July of 2017 (which is insane to type).
Emarion Ellis (Davenport, IA) - 6'5 CG, 4* recruit (#7 Position, 105 Nationally)
David Joplin (Brookfield, WI) - 6-7 PF, 4* recruit (#19 Position, 114 Nationally)
Keeyan Itejere (Raleigh, NC) - 6-10 PF, 3* recruit (#30 Position, 156 Nationally)
They join other prior 2021 commitments in:
Stevie Mitchell (Reading, PA) - 6-2 PG, 4* recruit (#13 Position, #86 Nationally)
Kameron Jones (Cordova, TN) - 6-4 SG, 3* recruit (#35 Position, #162 Nationally)
We might still get one more in Tamar Bates (the final Texas recruit).
Dawson Garcia is testing NBA waters but it is widely presumed he will return next season as well. He is not in the transfer portal. MU will look very, very different next year. Shaka just infused a ton of athletic talent in just a few short weeks onto the roster, hopefully providing Carton and Garcia skilled and talented pieces around them to compete for a tournament appearance next season.

RE: Boom Shaka Laka
Shaka has picked up his 5th new player in the past 36 hours. Clemson transfer Olivier-Maxence Prosper, 6'8 PF that was a 4* recruit who saw limited minutes this past season.

We are now one over the scholarship limit. Someone is likely leaving in the coming days and weeks ahead.

SS and MU are on a tear. The newcomers, collectively, look strong. Florida and Wake offered KJones.
Great work by Shaka.

Shaka has added Oklahoma transfer, Kur Kuath. The 6'10 C was one of the top shot blockers in the Big 12. Kuath did start in 15 of Oklahoma’s first 16 games this past season, and he averaged 6.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in 19.9 minutes per game in that 16 game stretch.

Ouch. That's a blow. Good pick-up, however, with the big man.

I do not feel bad one bit. Carton would have made the team better next year, no doubt. However, as soon as he transferred last year, it was rumored he would be a one-and-done player. It was even rumored that if his waiver was not granted for this past season, he would have immediately gone pro anyways (at whatever stop that was). Personally, I don't think he gets drafted, but perhaps a team has made him an assurance.
I liken this departure a lot like with Henry Ellenson. Both Ellenson and Carton are skilled basketball players that came to Marquette for a single season. Their goal when they arrived was to make the NBA, and it was widely assumed that they would not be here longer than two years, max. These departures do not sting; departures like Vander Blue (as a Junior), or the Hausers (Sam as a Junior, Joey as a Freshman) sting. Those players were very much expected to stay and graduate, and when they left it was truly unexpected.
Bottom line, Shaka is molding the roster with his guys - and he deserves the opportunity to do that. I would not be shocked if there was one more departure (and that could very well be Garcia). He is building for not just this year, but for the future as well. And with respect to all of the players that have left the program, we did not win anything with any of them. Perhaps they find more success at their next stop. I am thrilled with the roster we have today (and players we will continue to bring in).

You know the Marquette roster and I don't, so I'll take you at your word.
There is much to be said for 1. having a program for which the players want to be a part and 2. having a new coach put his stamp on the program.
On that theme, however, I hope Garcia doesn't leave. He's very good and could help MU this season.
