Abilene Christian MBB Coaching Search (Tanner Promoted)
With Jeff Goodman collaborating with the other media outlets now, it’s time to begin the Abilene Christian search.

This should end up being a decent hire for ACU.

We could very well see some of the “Texas tied” names from the UTEP search being involved here as far as top assistants in Texas at D1 schools

Could ACU keep Golding’s top assistant as the new HC? Hard to say.

As a reminder, Lamar increased the salary of their HC to about $270k or thereabouts after previously paying about $170k. ACU can likely pay at least $250k, right?

RE: Abilene Christian Coaching Search
I think that it will be very interesting to see where ACU goes with this one. I hope they get a good coach who will keep the recent success of the program. Granted, I am a biased NMSU fan, so I really despise UTEP for many reasons. I wonder what was the major reason for him leaving. Does he really have a better chance to make the tournament at UTEP in the CUSA or in the WAC? Was this just an strictly an economic decision? Not that I am saying that ACU is better or worse than UTEP, but I wonder how much more he is getting paid.

ACU’s top assistant is Brett Tanner, who has been instrumental in the development of ACU’s defense. I hope he decides to stay at ACU.

Not sure if he speaks for the team, but they want the assistant named the HC

I would say his salary at least doubled if not a little more.

At NMSU, player demands worked the first time when Assistant Coach Paul Weir was hire at NMSU over Arizona Assistant Joe Pasternack (who is now the Head Coach at UC Santa Barbara).

The second time however, player demands fell on deaf ears as NMSU hired Chris Jans over assistant coach Jesse Bopp. Bopp was a finalist along with Baylor Assistant Jerome Tang (now Baylor Associate Head Coach), Oregon Assistant (and former Aggie assistant) Tony Stubblefield (now hired as the Head Coach at DePaul), and Oklahoma Assistant (and former Aggie assistant) Chris Crutchfield (who is now an Associate Head Coach at Arkansas).

Yes. Or more. ACU has been quietly raising money from big donors to upgrade the basketball program, including salaries. Best guess 350 is very doable, maybe more for the right guy.

RE: Abilene Christian Coaching Search
Not specific to ACU, but it always make me wonder when a school looses a coach, partly do to the salary demands, then hires a new coach for quite a bit more than their previous coach was making.

One serious question, if you look at the first line in almost all job announcements for ACU you see this:
"Abilene Christian University is affiliated with the fellowship of the Church of Christ. All qualified applicants for these positions must be professing Christians and be active, faithful members of a congregation of the Churches of Christ and willing to support the Christian mission and purpose of the university."

Will this limit who will apply?

The C of C requirement applies only to faculty positions. Staff, including coaches, are expected to be professing Christians but needn’t be members of the Church of Christ. The current WBB coach is a Baptist and the FB coach is a Catholic.

Re:salary- ACU really wanted to keep Golding and made every effort to increase his salary substantially. We simply could not match UTEP’s offer. Whoever we hire next won’t make more than Golding was offered to hang around.

Thanks for the clarification. That does open the search up quite a bit more. The raising the salary comment was more a general one, not one specifically tied to ACU.

For curious minds, here's the link to the bio of ACU associate head coach Brette Tanner who is the choice of the players. Prior to ACU, he was an assistant at Stephen F Austin.

Brette Tanner

Brette Tanner

Most fans support Tanner as the principle architect of the Wildcat defense that is the basis for our recent success.

ACU will likely promote Coach Tanner. If we don’t hire from within, a coach like Jerome Tang would be ideally suited for ACU. He is a professing Christian who enjoys the culture at Baylor where he can openly express his beliefs.

Golding continuing to have an impact on WAC men's basketball even after leaving Abilene Christian. He just hired an assistant coach from ACU's fellow WAC rival Stephen F. Austin.
