Pretty disappointed i know we are a bad program but this is a really underwhelming hire

Really? Barbee was one of the top rising coaches in college basketball. got his first job at (what was) a top mid major and had a great 4 year run before getting a P5 HC job. flamed out at auburn but has spent the past 7 years as the associate HC at one of the top 3 programs in college basketball. i don't have great insights on him as a person or coach, but his resume is very strong for a mac HC. compare him to rashon burno who was just hired at NIU. burno has no head coaching experience in college and his top job was 4 years as associate HC at a middling P5 program. maybe, burno turns out to be the better coach but barbee has the better credentials.

Burno at least has ties to Chicago area.

Barbee has none such to Midwest much less Michigan.

Barbee is from Indiana, is that not considered part of the Midwest?

Didn't play collegiately in Indiana nor has he coached in the state.

Having been an Indannoplace HS star 30-some years ago isn't going to help him at CMoo.

RE: A LEAGUE OF COACHES ...
yes, it helps to have recent history in the league and home state but it isn't a necessity.

whitesell has done well at the State U of New York-Buffalo but never played or coached east of Chicago

kowalcyzk has done well at toledo but never played or coached in a mac state

whitford has done ok at ball st but never played or coached in indiana (and has recruited indiana well)

nate oats was great at buffalo but grew up in wisconsin and coached high school ball in michigan before a couple years as a buffalo asst

I would agree with Pono. McElwain in football was a big catch but how many marquee basketball coaches with sketchy reps and still being paid money by the rich SEC were available?

Based solely on credentials, I would rank Barbee first among the recent hires in the MAC West. Of course Heath has the alumni connection to EMU and Burno is young with a ton of energy.

I think they are all solid hires. Different but each bring something. even if barbee had never been a HC, being the associate HC at kentucky for 7 years is impressive. throw in the fact he had a very successful 4 years at an out of the way mid major and I'd say pretty good get for a MAC school in Mt Pleasant. Heath knows the game well, is super experienced but not "old", has close ties to EMU and the area. plus, some solid pro coaching experience which is a draw for young kids. could be a long term coach there. Burno has never been a HC so there is some risk, but he has ties to Illinois and an apparent drive to tackle the job. Strikes me as a guy who wants to turnaround NIU and move up, but if he can do some form of that I don't NIU will mind.

in contrast I don't think any of the guys they replaced were terrible. montgomery knew how to coach and had a couple pretty good years, just couldn't really generate momentum. I blame a bit of it on that horrible home floor paint job, but the program looked to be trending down when he was fired. keno davis is a pretty good coach and had an identity and style to his teams. I think he overplayed some 1 dimensional 3 point shooters which hurt a few of his teams, but he had a good eye for under-recruited talent. murphy was a train wreck, the stagnant smoldering kind, of an offensive coach, but a bit of a wiz with zone defense. also had a way of luring some pretty talented kids to ypsi. but with that offense it was only a matter of time.

Monty had to have something going beyond the W-L record, no MAC school fires a coach during the season, especially in a pandemic. Still a career MAC record that was sub .400.

Keno had one great year at Drake when he inherited a loaded team from Daddy. Fired at Providence and now CMU, he had a MAC career record similar to Monty's, sub .400.

Murphy, like you say was just too fixated on the ZONE. He produced an extremely boring product but had a better MAC record than his aforementioned colleagues.

At the end of the day NONE of these guys held a candle career-wise to coach Hawkins that your alma mater kicked to the curb. They had enough time to develop something and did not. Additionally all three had downward trajectories similar to that of Hawk, which presumably caused WMU not to renew him.

At some point one has to wonder why MAC BB schools let established less than mediocre coaches continue their careers when Nate Oats gave them a template to success. Just my viewpoint.

Pono, wish had the link to the 1990 NIT game with Siena in Albany. Siena had a big league going into the last part of the second half. The announce started announcing ticket information for the next NIT game. Barbee had a huge drive/motor and came up big with big shots. UMass won the game thanks in part to Tony Barbee. Think he will be very good for CMU. As always how we schedule some more games with MAC teams.
