RE: John Cunningham evaluation?
Best results possible out of the cluster**** we have been oogling the past couple weeks.

Now hopefully Miller hits the jackpot on short notice in the portal and on the recruiting trail.

Listen to Chad's podcast from last night. Sounds like he spoke to 12-15 candidates then narrowed them down. The four you are mentioning were the last 4 considered, which makes some sense. They each had different strengths (and were likely the ones Cunningham liked most with those particular strengths). Martin was a 15 year assistant for a hall of fame coach with strong ties to the program. Pedon is a hot coaching name as an assistant, with strong long ties and known for ability to coach offense. Nored was a really young, rising star with little coaching experience in college but is incredibly well regarded as a future star (apparently was the second choice in the Minnesota search). Miller was the mid major head coach with a strong mid major coach resume.

Sure, you can give him credit for getting him to sign on the dotted line. i echo the sentiment that he was trying to line up the NC job, and when he didn't get it, went for a better opportunity and bigger payday (maybe significantly bigger since i don't know how much he made at uncg). At most, i can give Cunningham credit for taking advantage of the circumstances when they tilted in his favor, but all in all, he hired the guy that we could get. i wouldn't say Cunningham punched up in class.

He got the highest regarded coach under 40. He got the guy who was second for the best coaching job in this country. People seem to think every program goes out and steals an elite coach with a hall of fame coaching resume. Again...here are the hires from power conference programs not named Texas this offseason:

Minnesota just hired a Xavier assistant coach as their head coach.
UNC just hired their own assistant coach.
Boston College just hired the head coach from College of Charleston
Depaul just hired an assistant from Oregon
Iowa State just hired a coach who was 29-30 at UNLV
Texas Tech just hired their own assistnat coach.
Utah Just hired the Utah State head coach.
Arizona hired a Gonzaga assistant coach.
Marquette hired Texas's head coach who may have been on his way out at Texas.

Of all of those listed by Mark, I would have considered Shaka Smart vs. Wes Miller but it still may have been decided that Miller would be our guy. Smart is from Wisconsin also but that shouldn't deter an AD from kicking the tires. Smart landed before our position was open too. Regardless, everything that is coming out about Cunningham's search and decision shows a comprehensive and complete process. I really like this hire and, every time I see something written or said about Miller, I become even happier with his hiring. Something else to consider with the coaching search - coaches who expressed interest but we're not finalists might not want their name out there in the public because it could affect their relationship in their current role and in recruiting.

I have also said this before - I am impressed with the fact that Cunningham's Athletic Department has had no leaks over the past 3-4 weeks. I am having a hard time finding negatives, other than silence, with how this department is being run and I read the silence as not showing their hand (with the coach search) and following the appropriate legal/HR process (with the Brannen situation). I have no clue how things are fundraising-wise and relationship building-wise - I don't get involved in those things. I do wish we still had a men's soccer team, just because the optics of cutting a team aren't good but, on the athletic side, I think Cunningham has done well so far. When something looks like a duck, I call it a duck. Sometimes the duck is really an American coot, and I was wrong. This one is looking like a mallard so far.

Great post and especially the details on this year's hiring at other programs. I believe one of our faults as a UC fanbase is consistently undervaluing our brand, our tradition, our campus, and our city. Fickell has worked wonders for our sense of institutional self-esteem. We all hope Miller does the same. It's a great time (the best time ever?) to be a Bearcat. I'm looking forward to tuning in @ 11 a.m.

i actually think the opposite. That most programs have to reach because the best/elite candidates can wait on really good opportunities.

i also tend to think the concept of Power conferences are less influential in cbb than cfb, in general; so categorizing them as such doesn't mean as much to me. i can't say that minny, bc, depaul, or utah move me at all. i don't know how relevant any of those programs have been on the broader college bball landscape. i expect them to hire whoever they can get. Texas Tech had a strong spell under Beard but can they sustain it? They weren't much before that to my recollection. iowa state had some good college coaches that elevated their profile but are starting over. Same with Marquette. Those schools have had on and off relevancy. Are they going to attract the best and brightest (as aside i do like Shaka Smart in general)? i'm not surprised that they went to assistants because that's probably the best they could do. The two outliers, imo, are AZ, who i believe are still dealing with the ncaa, and NC, which, as i posted earlier was a crowning.

All of this is to say i think Miller is a fine coach and i will support him. i don't understand the Cunningham love for doing his job and making the obvious pick. i just don't.

RE: John Cunningham evaluation?
Justin Williams just posted a great piece on the UC basketball Coaching Search. I just want to reiterate what an impressive job Cunningham has done with this entire situation. Since it's behind a paywall I'll only post a couple snippets (the Athletic is great, you should subscribe).

https://theathletic.com/2544799/2021/04/...ed_article

On the start of the search:
Quote:Cunningham started calling around to different contacts and friends in the industry and collecting phone numbers for various candidates. He had a short list to start with, as all athletic directors do at all times, but he also was asking for suggestions, making sure to cast a wide net. He ended up with about 20 names, initially reaching out via text messages.

Indirectly on Martin/Van Exel:
Quote:Cunningham would not comment on any coaching candidates other than Miller but acknowledged the significance the past held in the process.

“I was certainly aware of it, and I respected those conversations because I knew those people were passionate about this program, and I want to listen to that passion, I want to understand the past and those traditions,” Cunningham said. “It weighed in, it certainly weighed in. But at the same time, I needed an opportunity to weigh everything else out and make sure the reasons I was picking one coach over another is about the future and getting this program to where we need to go.”

On Cunningham's ability to prevent leaks:
Quote:That degree of tact was something Miller ultimately appreciated, a week after he was a finalist for the vacant position at North Carolina, his alma mater.

“I had so much respect for how discreet (Cunningham) was in the process. Because of all the coverage of the North Carolina search, that was difficult on my UNCG players. They were reading all kinds of stuff about me and worried they were going to lose their coach,” Miller said. “I didn’t want them to have to go through that again, especially if I wasn’t going to get the job. So I really appreciated that.

I found this little tidbit to be great. So many times the news of these things breaks before coaches get to talk to players because the leaks are everywhere and it's really unfortunate.

Quote:Cunningham had made his choice, but both parties wanted Miller to have a chance to tell his UNCG players in person before the news broke. The Spartans called a team meeting around 7 p.m. By 8:35 p.m., Cincinnati announced Miller as its coach, inking him to a six-year contract worth $7.875 million through the 2026-27 season.

BTW, the strategy of losing some short term PR battles by being quiet while Brannen's lawyer loudly put out their narrative was a good one. It's basically a nonstory anywhere other than message boards at this point and UC has gotten a ton of positive press on the search / hiring of Wes Miller.

Your observations are spot on. The dark side of our collective ability to opine moment to moment on social media platforms was on full display from the day after the Conference Championship Game up until Wes Miller's announcement. These were difficult decisions impacting many lives and millions of dollars in UC's Athletic budget. Such matters must remain confidential until they are resolved.

Bearcat basketball fans weathered a difficult storm and now have reason to be optimistic about the future once again.

I reserve my right to ***** and moan and have bad manners on this message board. It’s not anything I wouldn’t do in front of my family. I consider you all my Bearcat family. FU all if you don’t like it! LOL

That being said, things are looking great in hindsight. I am cautiously optimistic for the future of Bearcat bball!

RE: John Cunningham evaluation?
I like the Miller hire. It seems like Cunningham got the right guy at the right time, and cast an appropriate net in order to do solid research. I don't think JC did as well with the Brannen slow roll investigation/suspension/firing situation; Just doesn't feel handled well.
But, I am glad with final result--so overall I'd give JC a B-?
