MAC Changes Intraconference Transfer Policy!
The Mid-American Conference today eliminated the league's intraconference transfer policy, allowing student-athletes to transfer between MAC schools without losing a year of eligibility. The decision was made unanimously by the league's Council of Presidents following recommendations from the Council of Directors of Athletics. According to a news release, the vote was conducted after receiving feedback from the Faculty Athletic Representatives and Council of Student-Athletes. With that said, it will be interesting to see how the league coaches approach this new transfer rule as I think it will provide for some "bad blood" to occur between the two coaching staffs and players of the teams involved!

Huger seems to love it! 03-lol Michael Huger: "Now you’re looking at all of us in our league trying to steal each other’s players. It’s going to be a mess. It’s going to be the Wild Wild West. You’re going to have coaches fighting on the sidelines”

Kinda torn on this one. On one hand, Basketball Jones makes an excellent point about “bad blood”. Having said that, there are a couple guys from MAC schools who I think are still active in the transfer portal & who I believe could fill an “in the paint” hole for us.

Do I think there will be a player or two that moves within the league, yes. But far from the open season Huger predicts. Would other MAC teams like to have Plowden? Definitely. But if he entered the portal I'd see Plowden jumping to the A-10, not another MAC school.

If there's a fight for Swingle? ... That's a fight BG can have.

This is across all sports. People tranfer across pro leagues all the time with no incidents. I see Huger's point, the concern reasonable but sportsmanship will prevail.

Have to think nearly everyone will enter the portal hoping UT will pick them.

I spit beer on my screen. Ha! Well done.

I mean that in a good way for the record. I'm a Rocket fan first and forever - but as we should note watching the great tournament we just did - we are far from where this program needs to be.

Not a knock on the staff or school - just reality.

How about 6-9 Titus Wright from Western Michigan whose in the Portal? I am not sure how he would fit Toledo's "culture", but he definitely would fit a need for a big body in the interior!

He’s one. Groce from EMU is another.

I understand the theory behind players being able to go where they want, but if we get to the point where you lose 3 or 4 of your best players every year in a sport like basketball, fans will lose interest.

RE: MAC Changes Intraconference Transfer Policy!
fan interest depends on a lot of things and, in general, is unsteady at best currently. I agree with TK in the value of having a program and core group of guys and values. we certainly have a lot of continuity and consistency on staff. we tend to keep all our good player 4 or 5 years and the ones that transfer out leave on good terms with a good academic record primarily for schools that play at a less competitive level. TK and the staff is in the business of coaching a college team. with guys who spend 4 years and get a degree and grow from 18 year old boys into 22 year old men. some coaches are solely concerned with putting a good team on the court. they could care less about the overall college life and development of the players they bring in.

as for the MAC I don't see this causing chaos. i think the transfer portal will be nuts for a year or two and then kinda peak. some of the rules will be changed and made more consistent. the ncaa largely brought this on by creating some opaque transfer waiver policy that was inconsistent and applied unfairly. players basically revolted by overwhelming the server as soon as there was a chance. let's be clear. until recently, players had minimal leverage-for decades. you commit to a school as a 17 year old high school kid and they control your LOI and scholarship. the decide whether you redshirt or dress and if you play (of course the quality of your play goes into this). many kids hung around all 4 years but rarely played. coaches could bully kids however they wanted. they could kick you off the team and tear up your scholarship and few other programs would touch you. they could block your transfer. they could sit you for a younger teammate and press you to transfer. meanwhile, the ncaa made you sit out a year even if you left for good reason. even if it was primarily an academic reason to transfer. the student players should have some flexibility. if a team or a school or a community is not a good place for you, then, you should be able to be a student athlete somewhere else. unfortuntely, what is forgotten is the old redshirt year often resulted in guys making leaps in development and becoming better players than they would have been if they never took that year off game competition.

not really interested in any MAC guys in the portal anyway. wright is pretty good but doesn't fit our system and would split time with AJ. i'm only interested in a transfer if it's a quality guard that can at least pitch in at pg or a bigger guy who complements AJ and Shumate. i'd expect the staff to only look at guys who are planning on UT being their last stop and have a background to support that.

RE: MAC Changes Intraconference Transfer Policy!
The combination of monetary compensation for student athletes combined with the ability to change programs every year seems dangerous to all but the biggest, wealthiest programs. But then again maybe it just will serve to legitimize what is already going on behind the scenes.

Agree with Coack K's comments. How long before a bunch of random players can just show up on game day and each team just picks sides?

If a player commits to another school through the portal before the semester ends, is the original school obligated to continue paying for his room/board and class fees until the end of the semester?

scholarships are on a yearly basis. most likely if the student is still a student their grant in aid will apply through the end of the spring term. you can announce a plan to transfer and still finish your course work for the term at the original school.

I understand this philosophy .. but think it needs to be adjusted for the times.

If I were a coach, I'd recruit 2 HS players per year with the understanding by them and their parents they would be a redshirt first. Hopefully, the mentality gains traction that the NCAA one-time transfer with immediate eligibility will only be good following the sophomore season.

If that becomes the rule, then nearly half of your 13-man roster would ALWAYS be made up of 'program' players. Transfers/jucos would make up the rest.

You now have players who have made a commitment to your program, with hopefully half of them in your 7-8 man rotation. You already see some foundation elements for this at several programs around the league this past season - Buffalo, Akron, Kent, Ohio even Toledo - all had transfers as well as players recruited as freshmen in their top 7-8 players.

I believe that's the new program dynamic for success.

The one and done plyers at P5 level are issues that the P5 can use the portal to fill if they can't recruit a 5 star to replace the 5 star leaving. It is going to be like a minor league for Blue Chip programs and a thorn for mid majors.
