From where do ACU fans get the idea that they have a shot at McCasland? I read their board and his name popped up a few times.

I still can’t believe UTEP passed on Sadler and all those potential CBI and NIT invites

Coach Golding winning the press conference by tying himself to one of Haskins favorite places. Smart. The guy was certainly high energy today.

I'm disappointed that UTEP went back to Haskins style defensive coach rather than a good recruiting coach.

I think Golding will have some success at UTEP and any post season appearances will be welcomed.

I was hoping for Tang.

You're joking right? We literally just got rid of one of the best recruiting coaches in the state/region.

Wait is this DBminer?

I realize that. Terry was a great recruiter but not a very good coach.

Here is how I see it though........

For under 1 million dollars, UTEP cannot afford to hire a coach that is good at both.

They either have to hire a good ball coach or a good recruiter. The won't get both.

Good ball coaches get decent players and with two or three years in the system can put some good basketball teams on the court and maybe make an occasional NCAA Tournament.

Good recruiters get better players and on any given year can put a good team on the court and with a little luck get a super team.

We saw that in Tony Barbee's last year. Most people agree that if Barbee had stayed that next year's team would have been a top 10 team.

Golding might have a good team in 3 or 4 years but UTEP fans won't wait that long.

Also, today's basketball player wants to run and gun and score. Today's basketball fan wants to see exciting basketball. Not Hoosiers basketball.

Mark my words. Golding will have some success at UTEP but it's going to take some time and it's going to be marginal at best.

You have to take into consideration that it took Golding ten years to achieve those last three seasons.

Terry basically got run out of town after year 3 and he was on the hot seat after year two.

Also, conference USA is a far superior conference. Western Kentucky, North Texas, La Tech, UAB, are all good schools and the others are getting better. On top of that, UTEP has Kansas on their schedule as well as New Mexico St. twice.

Golding is going to have to show improvement and fast of Miner fans aren't going to give him much love.

UTEP does have an advantage of not being a struggling D2 program transitioning to D1.

The issue with Terry is that he went the transfer route and a quick fix. Out of our 8 regulars last year, 1 was home grown. The team seemed to have talent, but it clear they were underachieving and not improving significantly. I'd prefer Golding to build the program for the long haul and would give him a longer leash. If he builds through transfers, then he better win quick.

I do agree that I'm not convinced how well his style of play will transfer to CUSA. We'll see.

I wouldn't say they were underachieving. They just didn't have a bench and because of that, the starters had to play too many minutes. I think if Terry had a couple more years he would have made it to the post season.

There is no reason however why Golding cannot have immediate success with these players. He himself said the same thing. He should at least be .500 this season and get into the post season by year two.

There is no reason why Golding should have a longer leash than Terry. If you can't have a better than .500 season by year three then you need to be out.

I have not been about to confirm this but over the weekend it was reported on Twitter that UTEP has lost all but three of it's 7 man rotation.

Supposedly only three are staying.

Agnew, Boume and Bienamy.

Who is Golding going to bring in as his assistants? Any word on that.
Is he keeping anyone from Terry's staff?

Supposedly Onyema and Kennedy also staying. Onyema is an athletic, aggressive big man that is somewhat raw with lots of upside.

Utepathletics.com has updated the players on the roster to 8. It's interesting who is no longer listed. We are heavy on Juniors with no seniors.
Plenty of guards and only Onyema for a big man.

Boum
Agnew
Kennedy
White
Onyema
Bieniemy
Dekoninck

Also of note, one of ACUs recruits has enter the portal. A 6'9" Nigerian with a lot of potential https://loyolaramblers.com/sports/mens-b...nanne/1495

To hell it is. Once you've got someone down in this conference, you need to keep 'em there! 03-lmfao
