Interesting, no surprise that Nikki McCray-Penson was familiar with them. Interestingly, she set up a defense last year at ODU that shut them down. The Hayes shot a combined 8-28 with 9 TOs in ODU's only matchup with MTSU last year.

I don't want to get overly optimistic about basketball transfers because that has always backfired at Rice over the past decade ... but fingers crossed.

I listened to Pera's interview with JP yesterday and he seemed confident that everyone would be back.

For players like Olivari or Fielder (both of whom would find a landing spot if they entered the portal), I don't see why you wouldn't be in the portal yet if you were intending to transfer.

I've been fooled before, but stuff like this doesn't make it seem Olivari is going to transfer.

Women's BB has definitely benefitted from transfers, but agree in regards to the MBB

If everyone returns, I could see us being picked 3rd in CUSA next year behind UAB and Louisiana Tech.

Although that prediction may change if other teams pick up more incoming transfers.

Yeah, that was unnecessary. The gigantic 'Thank you Virginia Family" , Virginia uniform and orange font would have done the job well enough to express his allegiance without the blatant font differential. Would have been better to just omit Rice entirely.

I think she's gone, but with how quick players are finding transfer destinations anybody who's even considering transferring should enter the portal to see who reaches out. Being in the portal doesn't mean you can't return, it just gives everybody your phone number.

Honestly, my unpopular opinion? I don't think it'd be a bad idea for Wiggins, Smith, Schwartz and whoever else to enter their name into the portal. See who wants you while good teams still have spots open. And then when we hire a coach, you can meet with them, and if you don't feel it's a good fit you have a better chance of finding a good landing spot.

I'd be stunned if she ends up anywhere else besides Washington. Maybe Georgia Tech because that's where her mom played, but I think that's a longshot.

We just need to hire a coach. I was in favor of the Arizona assistants - one of them just switched jobs to Mississippi State which was surprising. But the other one was the one I felt was a better hire.

There's the primary reason why many of us have given up on college basketball. People like you keep presenting how wonderful it is for these players to have options, without giving equal time to the degree of selfishness and arrogance that are attached to those actions.

You seem to be well connected, and therefore you know that college coaches are actively recruiting players from other schools. No matter how much lipstick is worn, it's still a pig. "Freedom" for these athletes really means "freedom from accepting responsibility".

I should also add that I don't think it's a guarantee that Mulkey thrives in a better conference. In fact, if I'm a big school recruiting her there's probably legitimate reason for concern. In her six games against teams in power conferences over the last two years, she's shooting 31.7% with 2.3 blocks per game and 4.3 rebounds.

I still think it's the necessary next step for her if she wants to make it in the WNBA, and I'd root for her, but there will likely be a tough adjustment period. 6-9 with below average mobility plays differently in CUSA than in the Pac 12.

And to the point above, I can't buy that there's overwhelmingly selfishness and arrogance in choosing to transfer (there certainly is sometimes). At the mid-major levels, all I see are kids who know they have four years of competitive basketball left (unless they want to play, often for pennies, in HS gyms in Europe or Asia). I get loyalty. If I played at Rice and was a star, I'd like to think I would stay through graduation. But there are other factors at play. These kids are balancing academics, social lives, playing time, distance to home, fan support, happiness, and whatever else. Even if it sucks for fans, I'm never going to get mad at a kid playing at UC Riverside for choosing to play at Oregon State for two years. These kids all dream about playing in the NCAA tournament, and the unfortunate fact is that there's a crap ton of inequity that makes it hard for mid-majors to get to the tournament. You can be the best mid-major team in whatever conference you play in, and you have one bad game in March and it's "see ya next year."

Maybe if the NCAA figures out a way to even the playing field, I'd feel a different way about kids transferring. But right now, as much as it sucks for fans (and as much as I'm sure this is an unpopular opinion), I just can't seem to get myself up in arms about 20-year-olds making personal decisions. Especially when, in Rice's case, it's Drew Peterson, Trey Murphy, and Malik Osborne choosing between (1) Playing a CUSA schedule in front of 500 fans every night at a school with a student body that utterly disrespects student-athletes or (2) Playing in front of thousands of fans at USC, Virginia, and Florida State, and getting to play in the NCAA tournament.

Some of these kids are going to forever associate themselves as Rice students. Arsalan Kazemi came back from Oregon to get his Rice degree. Igor Koulechov is another one who I think calls himself a Rice grad and not a Florida grad. I'm sure Nancy Mulkey will forever tell people she is a Rice grad (regardless of where she ends up next year).

We do get some decent transfers ourselves so we can't blindly say we don't take advantage of the situation. Carl Pierre just had a long interview on You Tube with a UMass student reporter I think (?). I didn't watch the whole thing (it was over 30 minutes) but towards the end, he talks about transferring to Rice and I believe he mentioned he chose Rice over at least two P5 schools (Georgia was one - I don't know if I remember the other but it might have been Indiana?). Of course how hard they may have been recruiting him could depend on who you talk to.

Agree completely, especially about rebounding. As I recall, Erica was a foot shorter but nabbed almost twice as many rebounds as Mulkey last year. Mulkey had some double digit rebound games this year, but given her height advantage, I expected more.

I doubt very much UW will make the tournament next year.

We're basically in agreement, we just attribute the cause to different factors. Mobility feeds heavily into rebounding. What makes a good rebounder is (1) the ability to read missed shots and establish position, but more importantly (2) the ability to time your jump and high point the ball. I actually think Mulkey is pretty mobile for her size. But because she still doesn't move as well as players who are smaller, the ball basically has to find its way into her radius, which means her rebounding is probably more luck-based than others. When you pair that with slower reaction times, which you would expect from somebody her height, you get lesser rebounding numbers than you'd want from somebody who's 6-9.
