When a coach deploys a zone, what kind of opponent determines which type is gonna be more effective?

Defensively speaking, it's Speed vs length. Speed you may be more inclined to run a 3-2 as it allows your guards to get steals and easy transition points. You need to have a good lead guard with active hands. A 2-3 you typically have a slower SF type player but make up for that with length to jump the pass and cut off angles.

Cuse's zone is almost like a 4-1 as the outside guys play up high usually. They recruit length and speed is an obvious plus. They love guys with long arms. They trap a lot along the sidelines. Teams like Houston and Baylor are their Kryptonite as they grab a ton of offensive rebounds for easy points. If a team has a guy in the high key that can dribble drive, pass or shoot from there they can really hurt a zone. An elite, athletic center is another weapon that can disrupt the zone.

In the NCAAs you either want Cuse in the opening round or the Sweet 16 or Final Four...you need a few days to prep.

Another main function of the 3-2 is to stop penetration of a highly skilled point guard or to cover your own weakness of poor defense against penetration into the lane. This can work especially against poor outside shooters that have good slashing ability to the basket.
