Monday Musings
Lovely Michigan Spring day for a baseball double header in KAZOO. As always here are the musings.
It is a BIG Month for the President as the sexual assault law suit and allegations come out. Hopefully some reforms happen within the Greek community or it can go the way of the dodo bird. But without the Greeks, what happens to the large Greek houses near campus??
It is a BIG month for the AD as he begins a nation wide search for the most prominent program in school history men's basketball. Wetherbee needs to hit a home run on this hire as everything else he has done so far has been a big "meh" Two former EMU coaches just finished their seasons in the SEC (high school league in Michigan) If Wetherbee is not careful he might be lucky to get a job being the AD in this SEC and not the SEC he came from.

RE: Monday Musings
I agree the pressure is on Scott to get the MBB coach right. This is his high profile hire and will define his tenure.

MBB HCs are not hired to get super high GPAs (I noted that a fmr. Columbia player was a big cog for UofM. Nearby to me, Howard signed two transfers from Columbia). The only problem, not academics, is that Columbia hasn't been winning the last few years. I do remember them beating us, though. Very good academics are not why coaches are hired.

An article by Tony Paul about the ton of transfers in D-I hoops.

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports...000036002/

Might be behind a pay wall for non-Det News subscribers.

Mid-majors are expected to get hit hard as they become 'feeders' or minor leagues for the big schools. Do okay at a directional school and stay. Do very well and well, you can transfer to the HM schools.

P.S. A real contentious, intellectual point: "Coaches are free to do as they want so should players." Really, how much are BUYOUTS? Aren't buyout designed to do the same thing that the transfer sitout year does - discourage frivolous movements.

For those of us who are home owners, we recognize it costs a ton of money to sell and buy another house. It isn't like renting - at the end of the lease, adios.

For those in the labor market, I worked with the Federal government for over 30 years. I have REAL reason to stay (golden handcuffs, some might say).

Ditto for marriage. Divorce and re-marriage isn't easy or pleasant.

Easy solution. offer four year guaranteed scholarships. Oh you do not want to that colleges? Then don't be surprised if kids leave. No one cares when Ryan from Redford does his first year at Wayne State and 2nd at EMU and third at toledo.

Actually the scholarship should be 4 years dependent on satisfactory academics and personal conduct.

If coaches are 'cutting' players, then it seems reasonable that players can 'cut out' from their school. That seems a 2 way street.

the buyout comparison is terrible. coaches can pay out the buy out (or their new schools) - players can't.
