Would an 8 team playoff drive realignment to 8 conferences
If the CFP went to 8 teams, would it set off realignment down to 8 conferences with the CCG being the "Sweet Sixteen"?

I don't believe that CFP restructuring would drive conference realignment. If anything, conference realignment could drive CFP restructuring.

Ideally, you would have 8 conferences. Outside the P5, the other expanded conferences (Big East, AAC, C-USA let's say) pull in all other viable programs as 8 10 -14 team conferences - 8 x 14 is 112 - easily encompassing any program that should be competing at that level.

The conf championship games are defacto national play-off games, as winning those are what get you into the playoff -

So you have an exciting weekend with 8 play-in games, then seedings announced.

Even if the AAC champ is ranked #20, still an interesting game vs #1

But this is more "wouldn't it be nice" than a "driver" ... the P5 conferences would be loathe to give up a shot at more than one of the eight spots.

Actually, everything else equal they would prefer three at-larges, but if some re-allocation of the eighth spot helps with some other angle, they'd have a look at it to see if the trade-off to see if it's worthwhile.

I LOVE jgk's method, though Bruce is correct the P5 won't let it happen. Which is why I'd just assume they secede from the NCAA and let everyone else play on an equal playing field.
