The best team in CUSA was probably North Texas but they finished 5 or 6th in season. But, the difference between them and the other top 5 teams in conference were close enought that you can make a valid argument for any of them.

And teams play unbalanced schedules all the time. Some posters on here will try to make our team look much worse than they actually were for some reason (hatred of coach?) I remember a poster trying to claim this was the worst ODU team in history.

Let's stop playing the game of what the silly crazy unbalanced pandemic two division standings say, and just talk about how good the team was.

You claimed that people pretend like the team was worse than it was, but you seem to think the team was far better than the 7th best team in CUSA, which is exactly what your basketball ranking bible from Kenny P says. So you can't be consistent in how you evaluate teams and tell me that this was not another disappointing season

And two tournaments in a row without even winning a single game. Not even in the discussion for the NIT either. I don't expect them to send JJ packing this year, but man, he's got to be on the hot seat at least. If we don't go to a real (NCAA or NIT) tournament next year, I have to believe he's gone. If not, we need to send an apology letter to the Capel family. That said, IF Curry, Trice and Ezikpe return, I do think we have a chance to be very good next year. Hopefully at least NIT good. Though I thought that this season too.

Maybe they should have finished below 2nd so they could have won a CUSA tourney game against Charlotte.

Why would we send an apology letter to Jeff Capel? Almost half of his seasons were below .500. That was despite getting gifted a stacked roster. Would you rather win 55% of our games?

*and I loved the Capel family. Grew up with them in Greenbrier. But, those years were a disaster.

I have never said they were far better than the 7th best CUSA team this year. All that I said was that they competed very well with every team they played this year, including UNT, Marshall, WKY, UAB. I would have liked to see a full schedule.

Let's give 'em participation trophy and extend JJ then. #LoweredExpectations

You can be unhappy with the results of a season and not think its criminal for everyone to still have a job.

And my expectations have been the same since around 1992.

If 7th best in a bad conference is your baseline for expectations, then you must have been ecstatic for most of those years.

Yes, most years I have been very happy with ODU basketball. Was not very happy when we were below .500 or when we won 5 games and lost to Holy Cross 46-45

Lol that is a helluva a standard you hold them to. Just don't be below .500, but really don't win 5 games and lose to Holy Cross, beyond that we're good.

If that were my standards, why would it matter to you? Im not concerned with what your standards are? Its meaningless.

I get it, but now it's just semantics. We want to get past CUSAT quarters. I don't want to put words in other posters' mouths, but that is what I'm sure 99% of us mean when we say we want to win a game in the tournament and it's pathetic when we don't in this league.

5 of the last 6 CUSA champs have won their first round NCAAT game, the lone losers are us.

I think the team we faced is the best on the list above. The Purdue team we played would have dusted North Texas. Too big, too strong, with an NBA point guard. Ahmad played a hell of a game - too bad no one else showed up.

Second behind MSU I’d say.

I can see that. Different angle: I think our 2015 team that went to the NIT was better than our 2019 team that made the dance.

Totally! A much better team. The 2019 squad was less talented and was very lucky. They were just tenacious and willed themselves to several wins that were stolen from the jaws of defeat.

And if they hadn't willed defeat from the jaws of victory at W&M they would have received an at-large bid. I agree, that 2015 team was JJs brightest moment at ODU. Though Freeman may have had more to do with it than JJ.

No doubt. Better defense and Trey Freeman. Only problem was that when Freeman wasn't hitting we had nobody to really step up.

2015 and 2018 teams were significantly better than 2019. But 2019 they hit shots down the stretch in a small sample and got in.
