NIT Thread
Toledo a 3 seed playing second seeded Richmond
Buffalo a 4 seed playing first seeded Colorado state.

Different sides of the bracket though.

RE: NIT Thread
Good, step in positive direction getting two teams in NIT.

Hope they do some damage.

When was last time MAC team was in NIT?

Don't know if this is right, but the basketball section of the fandom.com wiki lists -- name(#bids): last year, last win, last quarterfinal -- updated from school pages on Wikipedia

Toledo(9): 2019/2001/1943
Akron(7): 2017/2017/-
CMU(2): 2015/-/-
OhioU(5): 2013/1995/1969
Kent State(9): 2011/2011/2011
Bowling Green(14): 2009/1954/1954
MiamiU(6): 2006/1993/1993
WMU(3): 2005/2005/-
Buffalo(1): 2005/2005/-
Ball State(4): 2002/2002/2002
EMU(1): 1995/-/-
[NIU(-)]

No current MAC school has ever won the NIT. I didn't list last Semifinal or Championship Game, since the most recent is 1949 and the others are during WWII.

But here's hoping that both Toledo and Buffalo update the last win year to 2021 (which in a 16 team field would also update the last quarterfinal appearance number).

I believe Kent State has advanced to two NIT Elite 8s since 2000 but don't ask me what years they were. I think one was a Huffman team and one was a Justin Greene team, but don't hold me to that.

Congrats to Toledo and UB!

Belmont being left out of the NCAA, and NIT, with 26 wins is a joke...

Like I said, I wasn't confident about the accuracy of that info, and it seems like whomever was updating that database stopped in 2010, since Kent State's last NIT was 2011, with an Elite 8 appearance that year, making it 2000 and 2011.

Our Elite 8 in 2002 was at the Big Dance, one presumes with at least some players who experienced the NIT Elite 8 run in 2000.

I'll go through the Wikipedia machine entries on the individual schools and clean up that list.

Toledo played @Xavier in 2018 in the NIT and @Southern Miss in 2014. Both times major contributing players were hurt in the MAC tourney and we didnt have a chance.

Yeah, that is one of the things about an NIT autobid ... if there is injuries to the players that made you regular season champion and that is why you didn't win the tournament, that can easily make you first round cannon fodder in the NIT.

Even more generally, the autobid is there because they under-performed their regular season conference leading record. Performance in the first game of a tournament may suffer if there is a lingering disappointment that you did not make the better tournament you were hoping for.

Nice to see 2 teams getting in this year. Will root for you guys. Think Toledo can beat Richmond, but need to finish strong. St Louis is very strong and Ford is pretty good with adjustments. Ask the Zips, they had the strong guy a little small that was killing UMass and he adjusted putting a double team on him for the second half.

RE: NIT Thread
Buffalo could end up playing someone else if Colorado St. gets plucked to replace someone in the NCAA Bracket.

Replacement teams, in case of Covid knockouts are:
1. Louisville
2. Colorado St.
3. St. Louis
4. Ole Miss

Hard to believe NIT doesn't have its Final Four in Madison Square Garden anymore.

Location was one of things that kept it somewhat relevant.

I'm assuming it's just a one-time thing this year?

You're probably right, Mo.

It was a nice showcase for rising programs. New coach makes the NIT out of a power league with a 16-15 record as a springboard to the big dance the following season.

Extra practice time and game experience for developing programs.

Yeah, they decided against having the first rounds on-campus of the higher seed, in order to be able to bring all of the teams into a single area and keep them there for the duration of the tournament. Once they made that decision, the Madison Square Garden Final Four was out.

So it's all part and parcel with 16 school field and the all at-large picks, a one-off for this year.
