RE: NCAA Tournament Round 1: Illinois
They have to work so hard to get open looks, and Illinois' size and speed is just completely wearing them down on the defensive side. The margin for error is just so slim on every single possession.

RE: NCAA Tournament Round 1: Illinois
You lost 78-49. If it's any consolation, something happened for the first time from 2010-2011 to now. Illinois became the first team during that time to make 2 or fewer threes, make 4 or fewer free throws, and win by at least 29. You made all 4 free throws, and Illinois made 4 of 8. Illinois became the eighth team from 2010-2011 to now to make half or fewer of their free throws, have their opponent make all of their free throws, and win by at least 29. Four of the seven previous teams to do that beat a team not in Division I. It was the sixth time this season and 43rd time from 2010-2011 to now that one team make all of their free throws and the other team made exactly half.

Bell led you with 12 points. Butler led you in rebounds and had a double-double with 10 and 10. Wynter had only 2 assists, and Williams led you with 3. Williams entered averaging 0.4 rebounds and raised it to 0.6. Bickerstaff shot 1-8 and had 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Walton scored 8 with 5 rebounds. Nobody on either team scored a ton, and Illinois had the top two scorers as Kofi Cockburn scored 18 and Ayo Dosunmu scored 17.

RE: NCAA Tournament Round 1: Illinois
the game reminds of when somebody steps in against a pitcher with a 100 mph fastball and when he blows it by you say "now you've seen it". hopefully it's a learning experience for everyone and we come back better next year.

illinois looks put together and didn't cut us any breaks. there are plenty of teams around the country who would waste their size and shoot threes all game. they knew we had no answer in the paint and took it straight at us. i hope they win the whole thing.

i got 2 weeks of excitement i didn't see coming and we still have the women to watch on monday. no complaints here. my favorite stretch when when williams, bell, and oden were on the floor. that's our future.

Some irony is that Ohio State, the team that ESPN Bracketology projected as Drexel's opponent, was upset by Oral Roberts in the 2/15 game. Not saying that Drexel would have been able to upset Ohio State, but it's just one of those "what may have been" moments.

RE: NCAA Tournament Round 1: Illinois
My thoughts.

Illinois is damn good. Some of the shots they made, all you can do is tip your hat. Their own fans were in awe of what they were doing. Ayo talks a lot of ****, but he backs it up. He is freaking good. We took their best shot today.

Cockburn was truly shut down. He had 1 rebound at half, finished with 8. He got a couple good hook shot stuff he worked for, but Butler played the most physical game I have seen him play. He was ready to go on defense. He put the work in against a monster and really did well. Any time we pulled off for a double on penetration they made us pay with his dunks. But in the half court Butler really made his day tough down there. Kudos to Butler.

Shots didnt fall for us, obviously. We had looks. It was demoralizing watching good looks and some easy layups not go down. We certainly were playing ultra tentative in that first half. Credit to Illinois defense, they really made things tough. Their defensive speed was highly underrated. Holes disappeared faster than you could blink. However, in a game like this when you have shots, you have to make them. You cant be afraid or tentative. Butler was being invited to shoot the near corner shot. Its a shot he loves to take and make, and in the first half was afraid to take it. You cant play scared, even with a monster like Cockburn lurking.

Bell is going to be a stud. He is special. He was not afraid of the competition and will only get better. Spiker did a wonderful job getting the freshman meaningful minutes together in this game in the 2nd half. Amari made some nice passes late that are highly promising coming from a big man.

We played hard and never stopped. There were a few moments where we clearly lost focus and Illinois made us pay for each one with break outs and easy transition. Thats how a game against a top team gets away from you. All that good work disappears with a few lapses. With that said, our man to man defense truly did well today. I thought that was going to kill us with their speed, and until the last 4 minutes of the half, it really was not hurting us. Guys all stepped up and played well. We forced them into some tough shots, they made them. Sometimes that is just how it goes.

For the most part we took care of the ball. Early 2nd half we got super sloppy and the deficit ballooned, but in the first half we did a great job taking care of the ball and really playing some inspired defense. That was exciting to watch. If we play that type of focused defense every game, caa teams may never break 60 against us.

Unfortunately, in this game you have to make shots, when you dont, it gets ugly. But that is nothing be ashamed of. Despite the margin, this team put some really solid minutes in. There was really only 10-15 minutes where we let things get away from us and it happened quickly. It was a 7 point game at the under 4. It felt closer than 7 too. We were down 18 at half. First few minutes of the 2nd half we got careless and let them open it up. Beyond those we truly played well, which is hard to say when we lose by 29. There is no doubt that the difference between a 15 seed and 16 seed is monumental.

I am quite proud of this team and what they accomplished. I was honored that I got to attend this game. I am extremely hopeful with our future in our freshman. The future has the potential to be bright. Lets capitalize on this success and continue to grow.

One other note.

The CAA commisioner was in our section and we chatted him up briefly before the tip and...he is as useless as we all speculate. He is spineless and acted like us getting a 16 was ok for the conference. He basically said he did no protesting or petitioning for better seeding for the conference. He also acted like playing 56% of conference games was ok. "It was a tough situation and we did as good as we could considering. We had tough protocols." I am sure that is what he has to say, but it was not ok and was not as good as we could do as a conference. It was a brief couple question dialogue, but he would have been better off declining to chat with us when asked. They were pointed and direct questions that he asked poorly. Hope our conference gets some real leadership soon.

It was nice of him to allow us to ask him a couple questions though. He didnt have to do that, so there is that.

And Purdue...another highly seeded Big Ten team, just went down. And in their home region with their hometown fans in attendance.

RE: NCAA Tournament Round 1: Illinois
2 minor gripes. NCAA tournament is supposed to be impartial. In our game, and I was probably the only one who noticed but...

1. During team introductions, ours was simple introductions of the players (with emphasis/emotion). For Illinois there was pump up music blaring while they introduced them. Seems to me it should be the same for all teams.

2. They played each teams fight song 1 time early on around the first media timeout. For Drexel they started our fight song then interrupted it to play a video about the school. For Illinois they played the school video then the full fight song. For fans having the fight song is a sense of pride so having that cut off was disappointing, even if we all still continue on with it despite it not playing any more.

Yeah, I’m not trying to pick a fight or anything but I had the same issue last time Drexel hosted the WBB CAAT. Delaware player fouls out & the Drexel in-game sound guy played Hit the Road Jack. Ummm, in the conference tournament?? Don’t like it when supposedly “neutral” venues don’t even try to be neutral.

RE: NCAA Tournament Round 1: Illinois
I dont disagree, even though Delaware sucks, when a school is hosting the tournament thats still a big difference from the NCAA tournament. When a school is hosting tis expected to be not as neutral as it should be, whether thats Elon, JMU, Drexel etc. At the NCAA tournament is a different animal where its actually run by a neutral entity. There are no excuses there.

Yeah I guess. The nuts and bolts are the same though: the people running those aspects of the event haven’t been given strict enough guidance or oversight.

RE: NCAA Tournament Round 1: Illinois
my take away from going to the tournament a number of years ago is it's not built for the fan experience. no promos...no interesting signage in the arena...no nothing. they only gave about a 1 hour turnaround to clear the arena for the first session and get back in for the night session. everyone was crowded in the lobby trying to get in at once. it really is a made for tv experience. i figure that hasn't changed in the last 8 years.

I always found the sterile, no advertising environment strange. I don't understand why a money sucking organization like the NCAA that wants to suck up every advertising dollar for TV refuses to allow advertising in the arenas. Even at the NIT games at the DAC, they had to cover up all of the ads and couldn't have any sponsored halftime or timeout promotions.

Because that’s “free” advertising for companies who didn’t pay the NCAA’s ransom. I remember attending a WBB NCAA game @ Pitt in 2007 & the speed with which an usher handed me a PowerAid cup to put my bottled water in was wild. They weren’t about to have Deer Park on TV and hear about it from CocaCola.

There are a ton of "do's and don'ts" and rule/regulations for the NIT/WNIT and the CAA tourney games. We had to guard the ball rack pregame to ensure that no player had access until the 60 minute pregame clock started for the WBB tourney. Same game ball for all games. Things that the PA Announcer had to/could not say in various circumstances. Was always an interesting read and the interaction with the tournament/conference office officials.

Did Drexel get any money for playing Illinois? Or only if they won?

Yes of course. Every game played gets a certain amount per unit that goes to the conference and split between schools and the excellence pool

Confidence goes a long way. Loyola really making Illinois work early on. Will see if Illinois does a quick blitz on them like they did us the last 4 minutes
