This thread got my feeble brain to wondering. How many "Games of the Century" have we had in the last hundred years? Surely, this isn't the only one.

I think both ND vs Mich State and ND vs FL State were titled "Games of the Century"

Game is still on, after all. Looks like the Huskers got caught looking for an opponent.

That's what appears to have happened. UNL was trying to do this quietly so that by the time it came out it was a fait accompli.

So we can thank whoever in the UNL camp leaked this to McMurphy for spilling the beans a1nd shaming Nebraska in to retreating from it before they could make a deal to drop the game.

Yes, that person is the invisible unsung hero. And likely did it for exactly that reason.

This leak ain't in Nebraska. A MAC AD got a hold of this and let it slip. Anyone want to guess it was Ohio?

Why do you think it was Ohio? Just wondering.

A certain coach there had that old school Nebraska attitude and not much love for the current iteration. MAC is a close knit group, which means all of them knew about this. Once it was pretty clear they wouldn't be taking Nebraska's money I am sure it just slipped out.

Nothing like getting a good needle in for something you don't like, to someone you don't like, for a good reason. This is that exact scenario.

Wouldn't you know that there is actually a Wikipedia page on the subject. Their answer? Fourteen games, beginning in 1935. That would lead me to another question. Does this work like a championship belt, where the most recent Game of the Century wrests the crown from the last one before it? I mean, both can't truly be the Game of the Century at the same time. Can they?

Now, with a CFP in place, would any final between two previously unbeaten teams ranked #1 and #2 automatically become a Game of the Century?

For the record, Wiki lists six games of the century before the Sooner-Husker matchup and seven more since. Given Americans' almost pathological need to rank things, should there be some sort of official poll to decide which of the games that took place in the 20th Century was, in fact, the Game of the Century?

Not a good look for Nebraska. Horrible message to the team. They now think that your coach doesn't think they can beat OK. If your a good coach you can have your team for one game compete.

IMO a Game of the Century has to be a regular season game

Slightly off topic, but so much for the idea of reviving the Oklahoma/Nebraska series in the Big Ten. Regardless of the competitiveness, it obviously doesn't mean that much to Nebraska to play. It's a shame though.

I for one would like to see some of the old rivalries as permanent or semi-permanent fixtures in OOC scheduling:

Colorado vs an ex-Big 8

Missouri vs an ex-Big 8

Nebraska vs an ex-Big 8

TAMU vs an ex-SWC

WVU vs M’land/Pitt/VT/Cuse

Pitt, Cuse, & Rutgers vs ex-BE

Penn St vs Pitt

The only SWC team I would care to watch Texas A&M play would be Texas.

The only Big 8 teams I would care to watch Nebraska play would be Oklahoma and Colorado.

The only Big 8 team I would care to watch Missouri play would be Kansas.

Syracuse? I probably remember them playing Penn State the most being a Penn State fan as a kid.

Playing OU in Norman is tough - there's a good reason UT doesn't do it.

TCU-SMU in 1935 was described as a "Game of the Century." It's still played, but somehow has lost that allure.
