Sounds a lot like the Kaplan announcement. Same donors, etc.

RE: From the Desk of the Interim AD
I believe the minimum number of sports required to maintain Division I status is 14.

I think it is premature for several posters to say that maintaining 23 sports is unsustainable....until we have given it a try for several years. This year, the first in recent years in which any kind of concerted push was made to raise money exclusively for athletics, proved that the Tribe faithful will pony up when the needs are explained to them in an open and transparent manner. In fact, several of the sports are well on their way to covering their goals for next year. I think that Swimming and Track will have no problem raising their funds for the foreseeable future. So, there might be some sports down the line that have trouble meeting their goals but it won't be Swimming or Track. To me, it is already looking like it will be some of the women's sports that may have trouble reaching their goal -- perhaps because they think they are safe because of Title IX quotas. However, they had better be alert because if W&M adds Softball or Rowing then some other women's sports might be vulnerable.

Here, speaking only about competitive excellence and not about athletic opportunities for students, if there was any sport at W&M that would not be missed it is golf. I don't think either golf team has ever won a CAA championship and, in fact, in my 47 years of following Tribe sports I don't ever remember a golf team being good. Every other sport has won something some time.

You can only hope they are saying that to cover someone or some groups butt. Otherwise, it’s frustrating to acknowledge the major problem though misappropriate the root cause. You’ll never solve the problem.

For anyone who may remember, when Walter Zable donated all that money which led to the renaming of the stadium - in the early 90s - the gift was defined in the press “a permanent endowment of the W&M football program”. Does anyone know if that gift is still applicable to that statement? Is the money held somewhere?

RE: From the Desk of the Interim AD
Blaming COVID is just too convenient an excuse to pass up using, whether true or not imho. We all recognize that as a smoke screen. The question then arises is it used for a purpose, or just because its convenient.

I agree that recognition of mistakes is the first step in correcting them. Hopefully the public statement of blaming COVID is not reflective of what is going on behind the scenes. Hopefully the Interim AD is doing everything possible to correct internal operating and structural deficiencies so that the incoming AD will not lose momentum uncovering and correcting these items, but rather focus on the future of the athletic program.

Given the interim AD's permanent position he should be in a unique position to fix internal procedures and any structural deficiencies. This would give the incoming AD a head start on programs.

Most Athletic Endowments are held at the W&M Foundation. The Tribe Club receives gifts for current use subject to the donor intent.

From the Desk of the Interim AD
A lot of people lost jobs, had to fire employees, cancel contracts, lost investments, or, at minimum, questioned their financial stability over the past year. I think Covid is a reasonable thing to point to as, at least, part of the reason for reduction in giving.

RE: From the Desk of the Interim AD
When asked (and I have been asked) over the past two years I have consistently shared that communication and transparency are absolutely critical for future fundraising success and the overall success of the athletic department. Since last September performance in those areas has improved dramatically. Anyone who believes that the pandemic is a "smokescreen" or worries that there are hidden agendas at work should let Jeremy Martin know of their concerns.

I don’t get the impression that anyone is claiming Covid had no impact, just questioning if it is exclusive or even the primary issue on our fundraising collapse.

It would be interesting, even telling, to see how our fundraising drop compared during the last two years to our peers at UR, UVA, Delaware, etc.

RE: From the Desk of the Interim AD
It should be apparent to everyone that the firing of Shaver plus the turmoil created by Huge had a far bigger impact on the FY20 collapse of fundraising than the pandemic.

All you need to do is look at the public information about the collapse of the Lord Botetourt in 2/20 before the pandemic started as an example. The amount raised BEFORE the pandemic in 2/20 dropped by over 50% compared to 2/19 while it was higher than 2/19 in 2/21.

These are facts.

I think 3 things can be true.

1 - The pandemic played a role in decreased fundraising

2 - Huge/Shaver firing played a role in decreased fundraising

3 - It would be inappropriate for Martin to mention #2 in a mass email.

For those not paying close attention, it is a staggering amount of money that was squandered. I absolutely believe that the pandemic had something to do with it, but to me it was more like piling on at that point. Lots of work to do to right the ship and keep it afloat. We need someone with a lot of courage and drive.

We need something a little more than that. Huge had a lot of courage and drive.

Court decisions like this will pressure all colleges to increase payments to football and basketball players to remain competitive. This evolution in the law will put more pressure on the future AD to consider cutting sports. Legal changes might give the AD cover/justification for making those cuts.

Unfortunately, many sports at the college level will likely disappear.
