For a quarter and a half, offense was balanced and threw the ball early and downfield. Threw to TE and several screens, all got big yardage. Bucs got great field position just before half. Got a big gainer on a screen. Ist down at 24, I think. Next 3 plays all runs between tackles, got a couple of yards. Kicked field goal. No imagination, nothing down the field, just ran into the teeth of Furmans D. As it turned out difference in game. Lost our momentum and never got it back.

Furman came out of locker room and just attacked the Bucs, took control of game. Bucs played conservative the whole second half.

Look at what the Bucs freshman QB faced n the second half time and time again. Run the ball 1st and 2nd down, maybe get a couple of yards, in several series actually lost yds on first two plays. Furman, as did all teams last year, blitzed on 3rd down, forcing QB to run for his life or be sacked.

Look at the whole play and distance and down. The QB can only do his job if rest of team does their job. Its hard for the rest of team to do their job when the Bucs are behind the chains nearly every series. Bucs offense does not make the defense play neutral. Defense plays run D on first two downs and pass D on third down. Sanders playcalling never makes the D uncomfortable or guess at what play the Bucs are going to run. Instead of D being on their heels, it's the Buc offense that's on their heels. Its just the apposite to what a normal offense so be doing. Offense should be dictating to the D.

^^^^ What he said. ^^^^ No question. Excellent synopsis.

I agree w/ most of that. I think that like basketball, this team has a lot of talent. I felt like ETSU was more talented than Furman. The first drive from Furman in the 2nd half was helped by two 15 yard penalties, both of which were questionable calls. First, Pinkelton was held before the roughing penalty, and the second penalty of a "late hit" was actually a facemask by Devin Wynn of Furman on our defender. It was such a train wreck of an officiating crew they got the number wrong on the call, using Wynn's number as the defender's number. Officiating crew was a nightmare, even calling a couple of phantom penalties on Furman, although most went against ETSU. We earned some, but no way we "earned" 103 yards of penalties. Ridiculous.

Devin Wynn taunted our guy after his TD, which easily could have been an unsportsmanlike. Sure, that only gives us field position, but field position in a 4 point game is pretty damn important

Regardless of all of that, we made too many mistakes to win it against a pretty good Furman squad. I feel like the team overall is pretty solid. I'm still not sure about Riddell. He won't take risks, that's for sure. In some situations, that's great, but at some points you have to and let your guys make a play.

Lane-Price dropped a ball that could have been a game changer. Had he caught it, he's one-on-one versus their safety. He may have scored on that play.

We're close, but we gotta be better. Furman has to feel lucky getting out of here with a win.

RE: Official Game Thread: Furman
If I were Scott Carter, I'd at least be asking Sanders why he so lamely settled for the FG to close out the first half. Normal football strategy and logic says you give it a couple of throws, just to see if you can make a play - and ETSU *does* have some good receivers. There may be an answer (likely he was afraid of making a mistake), but I'd like to here him give it. You don't win games settling like that when there's at least a chance to get more.
As Buc76 put it: "As it turned out difference in game. Lost our momentum and never got it back."
And what's really bad about it is..............one could almost sense that at the time. Furman had to be thinking "What.........they're not even going to *try*?"

But........."no question" we didn't deserve to win with as many penalties as we had. THIRTEEN - FOR 103 YARDS - and it would have been more than that if not for being backed up at the goal line on two of those. THIRTEEN.

This year's offense is not much different than last year, couldn't find the end zone with Google Maps.

I swear, on that second half-the-distance-to-the-goal penalty, the referee had to move the ball sideways.
