RE: 2020 SBC Men's Basketball Tournament thread
You know, App's identity appears very similar to what Ron Hunter did for us.

Shoot (attempt anyways) a lot of 3s and play scrappy defense. certainly a viable strategy for a mid-major league. CRH use to say that there are plenty of overlooked natural shooters to recruit and teach defense. Forget about size or rebounds because good bigs tend to end up in bigger schools with more resources.

Now if that strategy still works for him in American Conference, that's a different debate of course.

I'll say this though, it's no secret GSU had covid issues when App won twice in that weekend. 7-31 shooting percentages against App was not normal and very much below season average.

When GA St beat App they were coming off covid issues and Gregory didn’t play.

That said I think Vegas has the favorite right tonight.

yup. Covid protocols absolutely kills depth and continuity. We know firsthand and just recovered maybe week or two ago. Still working through getting the rhythm and conditioning back.

Their Semis were on ESPNU too. However, the SoCon is quite a bit better than the Sun Belt in basketball. Especially the last 3 seasons or so. Other than this year ESPN could show sold out crowds for the SoCon or empty arena at the SBC tourney. Why wouldn't they have the SoCon on the flagship?
No question the SoCon has been pretty good as of late, but the sold out arenas can be attributed to a couple of things. The Ashville Civic Center sits around 6,000 and a majority of the fan bases live within 3 1/2 hrs of it. Even if there were no restrictions this year the closest of the 4 semi-finals fan bases is 4 1/2 hrs from Pensacola. App & Coastal are pushing 10 hrs away. If their team makes the semis the SoCon fan can just hop in the Family Truckester and be there in no time. No so in the case of the SunBelt.

Having the SoCon Tournament in Asheville is the one thing they get right.

Yes it is. Had some fun and frustrating times in that building over the years.

Think whatever you want, but I've been saying here for years now that we need to get rid of the conference tournament or reduce the number of teams and change the format.

There's a nearly 100 place difference in the NET rankings between the 2 teams. That matters.

I will, thanks!

Again GA St is currently slotted as a 14 seed, App would likely be a 15 seed, so in this case it really doesn't matter.

Don’t fret, I have it on good authority that Keith Gill will be giving a halftime interview for the ages tonight.

Obviously I am in no way biased here, but we should all be cheering for App State. If anything, simply for the inevitable humour of App being a 15 seed paired against 2 seed Michigan and the hilarity of storylines that could come with it.

If the conditions allowed the committee will certainly grab that one. It would be too juicy not to.

Dont remind us.. Absolutely kills me that GSU was once #50NET and perhaps considered 12 seed before the covid outbreak on campus. Cant look back now but still absolutely disgusting how January and Feb unfolded.

One of the problems is we get so focused on the 3s you get no movement off the ball, a lot of standing around watching someone taking a 25 footer, not a good way to run your offense, but somehow, with stingy defense we have been able to stay close and steal the win.

Well, if you thought January and February were disgusting you will have a hell of a time getting over a loss to App State tonight.

NOT THAT I THINK IT WILL HAPPEN....But, yeah, you will be sick to your stomach for weeks. Anywho, how long until football season is it anyway... :)

Sorry, tot looking to rub it in, I know App played a big part in hurting the rating (both my sweeping GA St in January and then subsequently stubbing our toe down the stretch).

So really either way App is to blame for the SBC in facing a 2 or 3 seed, but hey we get to be in the conversation for the first time since we joined.

How many times have they shown that interview? I guess as many as the number of games that have been played.

Back and forth here... Both teams hitting some big threes, and really great defense all around.

GSU up 37-35 at half.

Too many sloppy self-inflicted mistakes 1st half. Don't see the focus and drive so far. Not sure what to say when balls go through butterfingers. Must clean up execution of plays.

To the 2nd half we go.

unbelievable. nothing going in all 2nd half, all the brick shots in the world. I think that should do it, great job App State, your players making enough shots when it matters.
