Paul Weir is stepping down as coach of the UNM Lobos at the end of the season.
The 41-year-old coach in year four of a six-year contract with UNM came to an agreement with the university on a buyout, though terms of that buyout were not immediately available. His contract called for $700,000 in buyout over the next two seasons, though the agreement reached is believed to be for less than that.

Weir, who was making $775,000 this season, informed his players of the move on Friday night.

He currently has a 58-60 record at UNM and a five-year career record of 86-66 after coaching one season at New Mexico State University. This season, with the team being relocated out of state for games, the Lobos are 6-13 overall and 2-13 in Mountain West play — alone in last place in the 11-team league.

The Lobos have a game Wednesday at Colorado State and then the March 10-13 MWC Tournament.

A national search for his replacement will begin immediately.

Great my a$$. He did well at NMSU because of a stacked roster. Same with his first year at UNM. Damn shame he didn't finish out the contract. Easy wins for all WAC teams against UNM.

RE: NMSU Great not expected to return
NMSU has culture. He couldn't repeat that culture at UNM. Had he stayed at NMSU, he would have won a lot, and brought a lot of high caliber recruits but he got his feelings hurt after the team wasn't allowed inside the arena during Garth Brook's concert one weekend. He thought he was throwing the middle finger at the University, but at the end, it was the University who had the last laugh. He is going to wish he had stayed at NMSU. I don't think it really matters who is the coach at NMSU, we're going to win.

RE: NMSU Great not expected to return
Menzies left Weir in a good place at NMSU. The Aggie roster was well stocked. The program had method used heavily by Menzies to recruit high caliber but academic deficient players and allow them to redshirt a season in order to develop on and off the court. If Weir didn't screw that up and worked hard at being a good floor general, he would have continued to have moderate success at NMSU; maybe not to the level as Jans but good enough to compete for a championship every season. Weir could recruit but he wanted it all too fast at UNM and maybe took on too many high profile head cases. Like Menzies, Weir is not the disciplinarian needed to handle difficult players. Weir didn't know his audience when recruiting and coaching his team. When Menzies took over for Theus at NMSU, there were a few high profile alpha type players with baggage which Menzies have difficulty coaching. Subsequently, Menzies didn't get off to a great start at NMSU initially. Once Menzies recruited more coachable players who were willing to accept Menzies style/method of coaching, the Aggie program flourished. If Weir had stayed to that same recruiting blueprint at NMSU, he would have been successful here as well. What makes Jans a better Aggie coach than other recent Aggie coaches, is he is the ultimate alpha in this program. Jans is capable of coaching difficult but talented players. It's Jans way or the highway and he will find a way to win games with or without you. What took Menzies (and Weir) years to do in developing players, Jans could develop that same player within one season and get maximum effort along the way. Consequently, Jans could go 10 players deep in his player rotation before season's end; whereas, Menzies (and Weir) always had four or five players at the end of the bench who were a years away from being productive. Additionally, Jans is a more masterful game tactician at courtside. Just my two cents on Weir, Menzies, Jans and the Aggie program.

Right now, I honestly believe Jans is the best coach courtside and game tactician in the WAC. I could never say that about Menzies or Weir. I could only say they were the best recruiters in the WAC during their time at NMSU. Menzies' Aggie teams were the biggest, strongest, most athletic teams in the WAC during his tenure.

I think Weir could do really well at a Patriot or Ivy League school, or some private school along those lines. A place where he can get good quality, smart kids. Weir is a cerebral guy. He'd be good in the right environment.

No he won’t. He is a joke for a coach. He ran different defenses every year at UNM and none worked. His kids had no fundamentals. They ran no discernible offense. Everyone looked lost including Judas. He was a terrible coach.

Well, I never watch a Lobos game so you may be right. I'm just thinking of him as a recruiter and thinking of some of the kids be helped bring to LC, as well as his persona. Some can be good assistants and terrible head coaches.

RE: NMSU Great not expected to return
Weir was successful at NMSU because of it's winning tradition. Any coach would be successful at NMSU. Even average coaches like Reggie Theus, Marvin Menzies, and Paul Weir. The down year 1995/1996 and 2000/2001 was due to NCAA Sanctions and 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 was down years due to Lou Henson's getting cancer. Other then those four seasons since 1988, NMSU has been at the top of every conference it was in. I don't think it matters who the coach is but Neil McCarthy, Lou Henson, and Chris Jans were the real deals but Reggie, Marvin, and Paul are just average at best.

RE: NMSU Great not expected to return
Quote:Weir, who is in the fourth year of a six-year contract and earning $775,000, will remain on salary through the end of the team’s season. His contract called for a $700,000 buyout: $350,000 for each remaining year on his contract. But in the separation agreement, Weir agreed to have that figure reduced to a $490,000 buyout, and UNM will pay $100,000 of the $275,000 Weir still owes New Mexico State University for breaking his contract there four years ago to take the Lobos job in 2017.

The $490,000 owed to Weir will be paid over two years – $245,000 a year – and Nuñez (Current UNM AD) said it will be paid for entirely by “private” funds. He wouldn’t elaborate on what exactly that meant or from whom that money is coming other than to emphasize it won’t “put a burden on this university or our current budget.”

Quote:When Weir left New Mexico State in April 2017 to take the Lobos job and its accompanying significant pay raise after his lone season coaching the Aggies to a 28-6 record and an NCAA Tournament berth, he had a buyout of his own.

Krebs (Then AD for UNM), expecting criticism both of the buyout owed Neal and any potential buyout owed to his successor, was emphatic in saying that whoever took the job would do so with the understanding that UNM would not pay any portion of a buyout with the new coach’s employer.

Weir offered NMSU a $250,000 settlement for leaving, NMSU felt it was owed $500,000, and the two settled on $450,000 plus interest to be paid over seven years with a payment schedule.

While UNM did not pay Weir’s buyout; it included in his six-year contract an annual retention bonus that was converted in 2018 to a payment to NMSU.

Essentially, UNM agreed to send the $50,000 per year owed to Weir as a retention bonus to NMSU each May 1, which covered the buyout payment.

As part of Friday’s separation agreement, UNM agreed to continue to pay the next two $50,000 payments.

According to the payment schedule included in the settlement agreement, Weir would still owe $175,000 after that.

What made Theus, Menzies, and Weir successful was they all were good recruiters. And, the environment surrounding Aggie basketball helped to that purpose.

The difference between those three coaches and coaches like Lou Henson, Neil McCarthy, and Chris Jans is Henson, McCarthy, and Jans are masterful courtside tacticians and have the ability to develop and squeeze every ounce effort from their players. The difference is apparent to Aggie fans.

The real reason Weir did well was cause his assistant, Jesse Bopp

Well, Jesse Bopp did bring a VCU flavor to our Aggie team. If he wasn't so young and inexperienced at the time, he might have been Weir's replacement at NMSU. But Moccia could not take a chance on elevating such a young coach to NMSU's head coaching position; paving the way for Chris Jans to take the helm. Up until this season, Jans has been nearly flawless as our head coach. If Jans were to leave in the future, maybe Bopp's name might pop up again in NMSU's coaching search. As for now, he is an Assistant Coach and recruiting coordinator at Florida International.

Hopefully the FIU coach gets tired after this terrible season and Jesse can finally become an HC.

Tired or fired?

if the HC gets let go or even leaves on his own accord Bopp probably isn't the replacement.

RE: NMSU Great not expected to return
The other assistant coach who played a major factor in Weir's initial success at NMSU was Marc Hsu; who Weir brought over from Cal State Bakersfield's staff. Hsu was/is a very good recruiter; helping NMSU to land Jemerrio Jones. And, if Weir had not left NMSU, two Dominican players LJ Figueroa and Chris Duarte were expected to join NMSU team in Weir's anticipated second season. After Weir left for UNM, Figueroa who was already enrolled at NMSU during the summer decided to leave for Junior College; as did Chris Duarte; after attempting to follow Hsu to WKU but failed to meet the Hilltopper's enrollment standards. Figueroa played two season at St. John's before transferring to to Oregon where Chris Duarte also plays currently. Presently, both Duarte and Figueroa are seniors and starters at Oregon averaging double figures. So, it goes without saying, if Paul Weir had stayed at NMSU, he would have had a lot of talent to work with in order to preserve his job. I'm not sure Weir would have had Jans' level of success but I suspect he would have won just enough to keep his jobs safe. Now, Weir has burned his bridges in the whole State of New Mexico. He was too ambitious, too quick. And, didn't have the coaching savvy to back up all his silver tongue talk.
