If you listened to Jans post game Donnie Tillman was a no-go to start Saturday's game. Jans threw him in the game for a short stint but he had an injured ankle and was laboring. And, as we also know Wilfried Likayi was on concussion protocol and did not play this weekend. So we were "shorted" two big men in our normal rotation going into Saturday's game. The only big men we had available were McCants and McNair. Compounding matters Gilyard did not play as well; due to injury suffered Friday. So two starters (Gilyard and Tillman) did not play meaningful minutes this weekend. Fortunately, our bench stepped up on Friday, but that did not happen on Saturday.

Tarleton fans can be happy with their win over NMSU. And, Aggie fans are left wondering if we are ever going to have a healthy well oiled team entering this WAC tournament. Our Aggies are playing hard but not with efficiency. And, injuries have continued to hamper the development and production of our key players. Johnny McCants is battling but an accumulation of injuries over the last couple years has made him a shell of his former self and what he could have been this season. And, Rice and Henry have been nursing leg injuries this season. For Henry, it has been leg injuries for multiple years now. So, I don't think he will ever be any more of a player than what he is producing currently. This is not an excuse for Saturday's loss but merely an observation of the performance of our players; having seen them play for multiple years. Jans' coaching doesn't look great at the moment but he is playing the hand he was dealt. This is the 2020-21 Aggie team.

As for Johnny McCants, this is what he used to be physically two years ago (for those WAC fans late to the party); a lot more bounce off his feet...

And three years ago McCants had the ability to adjust shot in mid-air...

As hard as McCants played Saturday, he is not the same player physically. What you saw Saturdays is now a heavier, step slower, and more grounded version of McCants. If McCants could regain most of his athleticism with an off-season of rest and recovery, he is one player I would like to see return next season; as a do over Senior year for this turbulent season.

"Certainly alot of the credit needs to go to Coach Gillispie and his staff. They did some adjustments and took away alot of the easy baskets we generated last night. Some of our sets, they took them away. And I anticipated that happening, but you have to find some other ways to score, and unfortunately it didn't work out."

With all that has happened this season... COVID, injuries, lack of team chemistry and leadership, this is not what Aggie fans are use to seeing on the court. I'm going to give this season a pass. Hopefully COVID will simmer down by this fall such that we can get back to the routines that made Jans' Aggie program special. Maybe an off-season of recruiting, player assessment, recovery, and development, and time for Jans to reimplement his practice routines, his offensive and defensive schemes, and game time preparation... and the return to the PAC will get this Aggie program back on its winning track.

It is obvious, NMSU will needs more help next season; especially after Gilyard, Henry, Tillman, and McCants leave the program. The low post is a question mark. Will McNair's development has been a slow process. Wilfried Likayi is talented but is currently a light weight defensively. Rashaun Agee has been marred by a series of injuries. And it is unclear if there is a place on the team for our 4-star big man Mayan Kiir; who has been benched by Jans most of the season. Jans doesn't play well with difficult players. That can be a good thing for setting the expectation/demands for a winning team. But it can also be a bad thing if the roster has too many players with disruptive attitudes.

And don't forget McCants great half court shooting that saved the Aggies from losing to GCU on their home court.

In that game, NMSU had the game won. But two inexplicable turnovers, by a unusually sure handed Aggie point guard (AJ Harris) put GCU in the lead late. The difference between that Aggie team and the one who played last night is the team when McCants sank the half court shot, had a no lose attitude despite making mistakes in the closing minute. This season's Aggie team doesn't know how to scratch and claw its way back from a deficit to win. This team plays "hoping" to win. The season McCants drilled the half court shot, that team "expected" to win.

Frankly, with the exception of a healthy athletic Johnny McCants, I'm not sure I want any of our seniors to return. I think having these seniors back would only serve to stunt the growth of underclass who I feel have potentially more upside with more playing experience. I don't want to see Henry eating up minutes playing great defense but missing a lot of open threes. I think with an off-season, Jans can elevate the defensive intensity of our underclassmen. I would rather see Jans teaching highly talented underclassmen the falling back into relying on Senior who can only take the program so far. I think with work, Williams can be just as good a PG as Gilyard... and probably a better defender. And, the road needs to be cleared so Gerald Doakes can develop into the PG I think who could turn out to be the best since Jans arrived here. Tillman is very athletic and is a hustler but his game is not very efficient. He puts up a lot of junk shot. I would like to see if Likayi could give use better result at the power forward position. I feel only a healthy Johnny McCants could really improve the prospects of next season's team; especially if he could be paired up with a D1 grad transfer or JC transfer who can really score in the paint.

Likayi and Watson both should be starting over Henry and Tillman. I also think Doakes can develop into a future point guard. I wouldn't be surprised if he was starting next season.

The Aggies defeated the Vaqs. Senior Clayton Henry had a huge second half for NMSU. RGV had a decent run in the second half, but it was not enough and NMSU pulled away for a 69-51 win.

Congratulations. Maybe this is a sign things are getting back to "normal".

We played this game today without three players... Donnie Tillman, Wilfried Likayi, and Gerald Doakes. SO, hopefully NMSU will have more in the tank come WAC tourney time.

I hope so but it seems like every week someone else is injured for some reason or another. It feels more like this season we’ve been barely hanging on by a thread. Besides the one Tarleton game our wins have felt hard fought and ugly at times. But a win is a win. What I’m hoping for is consistency.
