Losing UConn hurt perception of AAC basketball, but not in terms of actual performance. Their last NCAA tournament appearance was in 2016. Besides, it is football that really counts and the AAC is better without the UConn anchor.

When was usf's last bid? How about Tulane's? How about ecu's? Oh hell, when was Memphis'?

Uconn was definitely down and had been performing as a middle aac team but that's still a huge loss even ignoring the upside and their national championship while in the aac.

It is not a huge loss. The AAC managed multiple NCAA Tourney bids in the past without participation of Memphis or UConn and conditions are favorable the AAC will repeat the performance in the future.

Yes, the AAC will probably be able to get 4 teams into a future NCAA tournament.

However, to get 5 or more teams in, the AAC is going to have to at least replace UConn with a NCAA-capable program, or -- better yet -- add two NCAA-capable programs.

Note: one of those ECU numbers is actually USF's.

.

Let's break these numbers down by upper- vs. lower-echelon teams in the conference around 2018:

Lower-echelon (ECU, Tulane, USF, SMU): +79

Middle echelon (Memphis, Tulsa, Temple, UCF): +18.5

Upper-echelon (Houston, Cincy, Wichita St.): -48.6

.

In summary:

--2 of 3 of the conference's upper-echelon teams declined - - due to coaching issues and transitions.

--Memphis has improved dramatically, while Temple's fortunes have declined (due to injuries, player turnover, and a coaching transition).

--The teams that were in the lower tier of the conference around 2018/2019 have, as a group, shown by far the most improvement.

.

The improved rankings of the lower-echelon teams explains why the American remained the #7th ranked conference last season.

While it's helpful that the AAC is still the #7 conference overall, the increased level of parity could make it harder for the conference to get more than two teams into the NCAA tournament next year.

.

Notably, ESPN omitted the AAC from their list of basketball "power conferences" (which included the A5/P5 and Big East) during their tournament coverage for the sweet 16, but that was before Memphis won the NIT and before Houston made their way to the Final Four.

It will be interesting to see whether the success of Memphis and Houston will persuade college basketball commentators to continue their past practice of referring to the American as a "major" or "major 7" basketball conference.

.
