RE: Fall 2021 Football Schedule
I would put a game against UVA, Navy, Duke, Vandy, etc - even if totaling 2 of 11 games - above playoff risks. Besides, if you win/place/show within the CAA, you’re getting in regardless of whether you have 2 FBS losses.

W&M is a national university and has actual academic rivals in the FBS world. That’s far different from the majority of FCS.

RE: Fall 2021 Football Schedule
I think we should play FBS schools that we can beat. There are a lot of them out there, but not so many geographically. ECU, ODU, Navy, teams in the MAC and Marshall would be on my list. Maybe UConn and UMass. Playing UVA and VA Tech sounds good, but we should be getting killed by them most of the time.

1. We had ECU on the ropes last FBS game. Very winnable and we had unknowns at QB.

2. You know not every FBS team plays in a P5 conference, right? Marshall, ODU, ECU, Akron, etc.

3. Just an idea--doesn't have to be permanent--to help us through some tough financial times.

You knew those 3 things already. I do hope you have a fantastic weekend!

To rebut your points, here is what I "know":

1. A close FBS loss is still a loss. W&M well knows from experience that moral victories don't earn any points with the selection committee.

2. We have yet to play ODU since they went FBS. Re Akron and other MAC schools -- they are hurting financially even more than we are. There will not be any big paydays coming from them even if we were to play them. I think I read last fall that at least one MAC school considered dropping football for financial reasons.

3. I don't see the need to cripple our playoff chances for the money when I consider that a school that had the wherewithal to pull off a billion dollar endowment campaign should also have the acumen to be able to raise funds for sports. In my opinion, the school would generate more football spirit (and thus generate much more alumni giving) if it pursued playoff excellence. One place to start would be to drop the FBS game and use it to schedule a sixth home game every year. The surest path (besides switching conferences, which I don't advocate) to playoff success is having more home games.

I thought that Coach Laycock used to say that playing schools from leagues like the ACC helped with recruiting. These games provide additional media coverage and allow athletes to test their skills against programs that compete at the highest level.
Shhh, that'll be our little secret. Don't tell Zorch!

Some people fear tough competition and run from challenges. I'll bet anything our players would love the opportunity to play ECU over Lafayette.

A lot more money in a dire financial situation.

Media coverage.

Another great opportunity for coaches & players to stick it to the big teams.

Much more alumni and fan interest.

Opportunity for an upset.

Recruiting perk.

Hate to disappoint you, Tribal, but I already heard Laycock say that (many times) -- it doesn't mean that I ever actually believed it. Laycock was toeing the party line and the party line was the AD telling him that we had to play FBS for the money. The "media coverage" nine out of every ten years was the newspaper telling how FBS stomped us 38-10.

Re the lines that I bolded above: the tough competition that I am looking for is in the FCS playoffs. Insert North Dakota State (or Eastern Washington, or Montana, or Sam Houston State, or, heck, even JMU) into any of those sentences above and that would constitute the "big boy" or the "upset" that you are looking for.

I wouldn’t trade the last UVA win in 2009 for any other W&M football experience the last 30 years, even if it meant losing 10 other times to them during that stretch.

I think the goal for these games should be focused on some academic or historical connection, proximity and alumni interest.

You would be wrong. Just ask the players.

Plus 1

The players I know have said the FBS games are some of the most memorable.

And Jimmye & the coaches I know were just as excited as the players.

FBS is also a good recruiting tool.

Plus if you beat an FBS school, the committee counts that as equivalent to like five FCS victories.
