If you ask me, Buffalo and Bowling Green have had some good games over the years. It was sort of getting there as a rivalry until the Falcons started playing like Oberlin.
(We'll turn it around. We just need some time.)
I think the deal with Buffalo is they have different rivals based on sports, where at BG your rival is Toledo whether it is football, basketball, or tennis...it doesn't matter.
I think UB basketball has some good rivals because the program has been good the last seven years or so.
But going back to the rival conversation...
Ohio/Miami is Battle of the Bricks in every sport
Akron/Kent State is Wagon Wheel in every sport
This is where UB misses that geographical rival in this conference.
Yes. Indeed, for some Flashes and Zips fans, the Wagon Wheel proper is the combined FB/MBB record. To be fair, that's more often the case when the regular season MBB is split 1-1 and your team won FB that year, or when you lost FB that year but took both sides of the MBB.
Of course, that doesn't extend past Football and Men's Basketball ... no matter how much Golden Flashes fans might wish it, they aren't going to get any Zips fans to agree that baseball is also part of that.
And obviously both the Zips and Golden Flashes are undefeated in Wagon Wheel men's soccer games between the two school every single year, like clockwork.

I thought we could actually develop a good rivalry with Syracuse. We have played them very close (or won) each of the last 4 years in basketball. I think our football team is just as good as theirs as well. Too bad they won't play us ever again because we were too mean to them.

I think Syracuse would make the most sense, but being in the ACC, they likely think they are too high and mighty in athletics to play Buffalo more often, especially in a regular home and home series via football or basketball.
I think Army has become a good rivalry for UB in both football and basketball recently. UB sold out their stadium the last time Army football was in town, and Army upset UB this year and last year in basketball.
Lastly, I never understood why Kent and UB never blossomed into anything. The games are typically competitive and proximity-wise KSU is the closest conference rival to UB. Could there be something there in the future? Not sure why both schools never attempted to develop something. I understand KSU-Akron will always be the big one for Kent, but if Miami can have rivalries with UC, Ohio & to a lesser extent BSU, I don't understand why Kent can't have something with UA, BG & UB.
