RE: Unofficial 2nd Signing Period Thread
It's almost noon and I still don't see Starling's name on the FAU website for their 2021 signees.

I'm not 100% convinced he will sign with them.

Okay we have a,solid QB added a linebacker with upside the heirs to Ryland Bird and Julian maybe a walk on OT and a,speedster at WR. It's great to have, speed but what is ability to catch the ball? Do we need another WR how about a DT

we currently have 19 players (including todays signees) listed as 'D-Line'. im sure they have a plan for depth at the DT position. maybe they move an end inside?

we currently have 14 players (including todays signees) listed at WR - plus another 10 tight ends. i suspect we're going to see a shift with more passing plays designed to go to the tight end position next year.

I'm not concerned about depth on either position.

RE: Unofficial 2nd Signing Period Thread
Thought I read this article in USA Today. Oh, well here it is elsewhere.

Bottom line: Coaches are having a devil of a time trying to figure out these numbers with the grace year.

“You’re not simply planning for one season,” stated Liberty coach Hugh Freeze. “Attempting to plan for who’s going to be in your roster within the fall of ’21 and ’22, I don’t know, man. It’s past my psychological capabilities. I’m doing my finest and I’m taking a look at it just about each day.”

What he is getting at, is that it is possible to have one senior class (2021) which is really TWO senior classes.

Now, if these guys are the real deal, who wants to replace say 20 starters in 2022?

We'll see the best CFB ever in 2021 but who knows what 2022 will be like? Lot of teams replacing 15 - 20 starters and a lot of the 2-deep depth?

What happened to CJ Parks? Did Marlon Starlings commit? Thanks! Getting a LB was great to see!

Good guess. I always look at who follows or is following.

if I see a EMU FB staff member, then I take it seriously.

Maybe becomes a grad transfer after spring semester? One of those kids who I believe started mid-year has completed 6 full academic semesters + the current + summers.

If so, he would have two years of eligibility and also get his master's degree.

"What's not to like about that..."

As we've discussed before, any student/athlete who can do 6 year and get a master's degree while playing 4 or 5 year of CFB is doing damn well for himself. If a year is worth say 50K (at many schools) that is $300K value. No one should say the student/athlete isn't getting good value for his blood, sweat and tears.

And remember schooling is about MORE THAN the 300K. If the student/athlete puts his or her degree to good use, it can be worth many hundred thousands over a career. Say 20K / year x 40 years = 800K extra by getting a master's degree in an in demand subject. I know someone who recently (2019) completed a master's degree in a hot field and she fights off job offers.

And what is 300K? In a typical city, 300K is a nice house. Mom and dad can payoff the house while Johnny is getting a 300K education based on his skills.

We seem to have two JUCOs and two transfers in the mix all of them 6'4 or taller. I would agree this looks like a late spring signing. How many spots one or two? Who knows.

Yeah, this all seems to be coming together.

We had our grad transfer QB leave so we went out and got another (Bryant).

We needed another LB so we went out and got one (Burnett).

We still need a WR or two and based on Twitter follows, the staff seems to have some in their sights.

As I have been saying the spring signing periods (in both basketball and football) are to fill holes remaining after early signing period. We identified 3 positions of need for our FB team.

***********

This question is O/T to us: I wonder if h.s. players who may (or may not) have played fall h.s. ball in 2020 are eligible to play spring GAMES in FCS conferences??

These would have to be mid-year enrollees and the obvious question: Are they ready for D-I FB??

That is an interesting question. On top of their lack of senior year game experience and in-season workouts, having had three boys who played youth and high school football, I know how important off-season training and practices were to their development as athletes, perhaps more so even than the in-season practices and, in ways, game experience.

The seniors coming out in the class of 2021 had very limited (if any depending on the state they live in) off-season workouts and practices between the 2019 and 2020 seasons, so could be well behind where they should be in their physical development. In regular years college coaches work hard to get new recruits in shape and up to speed for the college level. For the class of 2021 guys coming on board, this could be an even bigger challenge.

RE: Unofficial 2nd Signing Period Thread
I have been watching CFB (mostly MAC) for 30 years. Not much really new. I don't consider if UofM ranks #2 or 8 or 13 to be big news. They recruit well. Period. Ditto for Alabama.

The first big story related to the MAC was Marshall when they were moving up from FCS. They got Randy Moss from FSU (not Ferris State U, but FL. State). Then got transfers from other FBS programs and recruited well. They moved to the top of the MAC and got to top 25 nationally as a program on the move. They were able to get transfers without sitout even though MU was about to embark on a FBS schedule and conference affiliation.

Next was P.J. and his 'Row the Boat' mantra and some very, very good recruiting. WMU ended up playing on NYD and P.J. moved on. Those who followed recruiting weren't surprised. P.J. probably had the best recruiting in MAC history.

Next, but not MAC-related, is Jackson State. I think everyone now knows that Deion is recruiting up a hurricane, not a storm. What makes this so interesting in 2021 is that JSU will play a SPRING schedule.

Now, Deion has a bunch of h.s. 3 and 4 star kids some of whom could enroll early. I think Deion's son, a 4-star QB, enrolled for spring. We'll see in 2 weeks...

Will they try to play later this month?

What about transfers? If they sat out Fall semester can they play now? (no need to sitout a year going from FBS -> FCS.

Jackson State will be crazy fun. Maybe this spring. Definitely in fall.

One P.S. on Jackson State. They were well regarded in recruiting BUT the big story is the TRANSFERS. One of the transfers is Deion's son who was a starting DB for S. Carolina. Lot of the transfers were 2-deep FBS players, er P5 players.
