Good schedule with only one D2, one FBS and nine FCS schools.

"With the 2022 season being our last as an FBS Independent, our scheduling goals for future seasons will change. It is our plan to schedule just a single Power Five program..." - Coach Kill

That is music to my ears. Starting out the season 0-2 or 0-3, because you are play 2-3 body bag games a year, is not conducive to winning. One body bag game is more than enough in a season.

I posted feedback elsewhere but as NMSU is able to shift their schedule(s) around in the coming years, if they can pull this off - it will be good for the program and completely change the trajectory of the Aggies beyond what Coach Kill will offer.

I believe that Sam Houston will have no choice but to have two P5 games as they'll need the $2.5-3M combined that comes with it particularly at first, but would love to see a rotational schedule that has a P5, a FCS date and pair of G5s (ideally regional opponents like Rice, UL-Lafayette, Texas State, etc.)

Yeah, you may have to do that early one to get things going. We play 3 P5's teams next season! Here is the entire Kill quote:

"With the 2022 season being our last as an FBS Independent, our scheduling goals for future seasons will change," Kill continued. "It is our plan to schedule just a single Power Five program, one FCS opponent and one group of five team for our non-conference schedule. It is also important for us our program and our state to continue scheduling our rivalry game with New Mexico on an annual basis."

It's a dream scenario:

1 P5
1 FCS
1 G5
1 NuM
8 conference games

Looks like NMSU is cashing in somewhat in 2022. But that is OK-- they need some money to get the program going. I also hope their athletic department is able to increase the FB budget very soon.

You got that right.

Our AD has said our revenues will go up due to CUSA CFP payouts. That at least eliminates the need for multiple money games. It's a start.

I really feel bad for Coach Kill. Taking over the textbook definition of a deadbeat program that’s got no light at the end of the tunnel. I mean, we all know how it ended for the last guy. Martin was chased out of town for simply asking to have some money invested in the program and for some A/C in the locker rooms. This is the kind of crap Coach Kill will have to deal with. For his safety, I hope this is short lived. No coach deserves to be at NMSU, let alone a great one with such a good reputation like him.

2-10 seems like an obtainable goal for the Aggies if they can upset Lamar. 3-9 with an upset over Nevada or UNM would be huge for them going into CUSA.

RE: Future Football Schedules - Western Athletic Conference
The Colorado State Rams have added the Southern Utah Thunderbirds to their 2026 football schedule, the school announced on Wednesday.

Colorado State will host Southern Utah at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins, Colo., on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026. The game will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the gridiron.

Southern Utah is a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Thunderbirds also have future games scheduled against Utah (2022 and 2024), WKU (2022), Arizona State (2023), BYU (2023), and Wyoming (2027).

“This will be an exciting opportunity for our student-athletes,” said Southern Utah Director of Athletics Debbie Corum. “By the time we play Colorado State, it will be coach Fitzgerald’s fifth year and I anticipate that we will be very competitive at this level.”

The Idaho Vandals have scheduled three future home-and-home football series, FBSchedules.com has learned.

Copies of contracts for all three home-and-home series were obtained from the University of Idaho via a public records request.

Idaho will begin a home-and-home series with the Abilene Christian Wildcats on the road at Wildcat Stadium in Abilene, Texas, on Sept. 21, 2024. The Vandals will host the Wildcats two seasons later at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho, on Sept. 19, 2026.

A scheduling alliance between the WAC and the Big Sky would serve the needs of both conferences.

The Big Sky has what - twice as many teams than the WAC?

It's a bit uneven for a scheduling alliance though I guess the WAC schools could get two games (one home, one away) against the Big Sky with the Big Sky schools rotating whether they are home or away every other year...

i.e. Idaho would go to Abilene Christian in 2028, Abilene Christian would go to Montana State in 2028; in 2029 - Idaho hosts a WAC foe while Montana State travels to a WAC foe

That could be fun! WAC schools get two games a year.

Meets the needs of both conferences. The Big Sky plays an 8 game conference schedule leaving 3-4 OOC games to fill, or 2-3 after their conference schedule and a money game. There are very few d2 or FCS teams on their region to fill these games.

Some scheduling news...

Quote:The Austin Peay Governors and the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks have scheduled a home-and-home football series for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, Austin Peay announced on Wednesday.

In the first game of the series, the Governors will travel to face the Lumberjacks at Homer Bryce Stadium in Nacogdoches, Texas, on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024. The series will conclude the following season with Stephen F. Austin returning the trip to Fortera Stadium in Clarksville, Tenn., on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025.

“This home-and-home series with Stephen F. Austin will provide our football team opportunities to prove themselves against a good FCS opponent early in the season,” said Austin Peay Vice President and Director of Athletics Gerald Harrison. “The trip to Texas also allows us to get Coach Walden back in his home state where we can showcase Austin Peay to a brand-new audience.”

FBschedules

Quote:The BYU Cougars have moved their football game against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds in 2023 to September, according to a report by the Desert News.

BYU was previously scheduled to host Southern Utah at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah, on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023. According to a copy of an amendment to the original contract obtained by the Deseret News, the two schools will now meet in Provo in Week 2 on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023.

Now that I have plugged this in, looks like Southern Utah has Weber State and Northern Arizona has basically built in games going forward with at least one home, one away for the coming years.

Once fully up and going, WAC fb schools will have 6 conference games and 5 dates to fill, one of which is probably an FBS body bag game.

For Utah Tech and S Utah it makes sense to schedule Big Sky schools for the other 4. (It would be wise for Weber St and NAU to get both permanently on the schedule).

Meanwhile the Texas schools are probably going to play a lot of ASUN and Southland opponents l.

At the moment ACU has future return games with teams from the SWAC (Prairie View) and Big Sky (Northern Colorado and Idaho). Unfortunately ACU has also booked two FBS money games rather than one over the next several years (TAMU & North Texas, Texas Tech & New Mexico State). Two FBS games per year may help the bottom line but hurts playoff chances with two likely losses out of the gate.
