RE: Grades for all newly hired FBS coaches
Charles Huff is Marshall's first African American head coach, so that is to be celebrated.

No politics in this statement below, just a sobering fact...

Charles Huff was the only African American hire this cycle out of all new 13 FBS coaches and 4 new NFL coaches.

Interestingly, New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh is the NFL's first Arab American head coach.

They gave Blake Anderson to Utah St an A-, lost all credibility. He will continue to outcoach himself.

I noticed the lowest grade they offered was a c.

Why didn't I see that? Of course that should get an f.

Retread coaching.

Another reason I did not simply want a head coach based on HC, DC or OC experience.

Backwards thinking IMHO.

Sometimes it works, like Lane Kiffin. Other times, you get Butch Davis.

RE: Grades for all newly hired FBS coaches
Who ever wrote that Im guessing if Huff would have just had the title of DC and not even called plays they would have gave him an A or A-.

Butch Jones was the lead candidate when Doc was hired. He was coming off an 11-2 season at Central Michigan. He interviewed at Marshall and accepted the Cincy job 3 hours later.

ULM should have received an F. Terry Bowden was pure awful at Akron. In 7 seasons his recruiting class was ranked 12 in the MAC 5 times. He won 33 games and in those 33 wins only 2 had winning records. Also RichRod may have been revolutionary in 2001 but that offensive scheme has been put on steriods, passed up and over by many coaches since then.

If you look at Akron before and after Bowden he was very successful

I agree on Bowden, but I still think RichRod's offense can work. Just 2 years ago the Ole Miss QB put up over 1,000 yards rushing with Rodriguez as the offensive coordinator.

That’s True.

In ULM’s case they don’t have much if anything to lose

The coach before Bowden went 2-22. The last winning season was in 2005. Bowden took over a team that had 7 straight losing seasons and other than his first year was not bad. Since he left Akron has gone 1-17.

But he only had one winning season. Obviously, Akron didn't seem to think that was enough. Not sure what the expectations will be at Monroe. I would think they would be pretty excited if he is finishing year 3 at 6-6.

ULM probably has a better recruiting location (South East) than Akron

He was still 33-65. One game shy of twice the losses as wins. That isn't successful. I guess you could call Neil Callaway successful to at 18-42. Just because Ionello and Arth are worse doesn't mean the stink on Bowden is a better smell.

Have you ever been in Malone Stadium, it rivals the awfulness of some of the SoCon stadiums.

I think Bowden knows how to coach in practice and on game day but I don't think he really knows how to build a program, especially at the G5 level. At Akron he relied heavily on P5 transfers which is a quick fix solution. It improved their performance but doesn't build stability. This hire looks great on paper and ULM fans are happy about it (understandably) but IMO the Rich Rod hire will be bigger for them than Bowden.

The RichRod offense that was perfected at Glenville State (DII in WV, He took Glenville State to the NAIA National title game in 1994) from 1990-96 and implemented at WVU in 2001 was great at that time. It was revolutionary at the IA level when RichRod showed up. Now not so much. Since then that offense has been put on steroids, turned upside down and inside out since then.

And neither coach has set the recruiting trail on fire in the last decade:

Bowdens Recruting Rankings While at Akron
2012 12
2013 9
2014 8
2015 12
2016 12
2017 12
2018 12

RichRod Recruiting Rankings at Arizona
2012 10
2013 7
2014 6
2015 9
2016 9
2017 10

With these 2 and the stage in their coaching career, Im going to be from Missouri, you know the "Show Me" state.

One small point, Huff is Marshall's second Black head coach. Dwight Freeman is Marshall's first Black head coach. I hope this hire turns out better.
