Man, CUSA was stacked then.

And the kid from Memphis, forgot his name, and the QB from UAB could run like a madman, and RB from UCF.

Edit: DeAngelo Williams, Kevin Smith (UCF), Joe Webb (UAB) All in the mid-2000s

PS if Devon Johnson had remained healthy he would have been better than all of them. 1700 yards in 9 games before he got hurt and a truckload of touchdowns.

In 2007, Kevin Smith rushed for more than 2,567 yards - the third best season in NCAA Division I-A (FBS) history - and Tulane's Matt Forte had more than 2,100 yards. DeAngelo Williams had more than 1,900 yards one season. Devon Johnson was dang good but, in my opinion, all three of those guys were better than him.

Meant the Marshall backs they were arguing about. But 3 more games should have put DJ around 2300 yards plus the bowl game, In that company for sure and that was as a junior. He played some as a senior but the damage was done and he still made a FA in the NFL even though he never ran again. He just knocked or shoved people out of his way and had deceptive speed when he got free. Was not a hole finder kind of back.

Also have to remember he got that kind of yardage while we had Cato passing the hell out of the ball and running very well himself. DJ was a tight end his sophomore year and converted to RB his junior year. So this was his first collegiate RB experience. Anyway. sad that was taken from him and he was taken from us.

Chris Johnson
Matt Forte
DeAngelo Williams

Gap

Ahmad Bradshaw

Gap

Kevin Smith
Devon Johnson
Damien Fletcher

This would be an accurate ranking if Devon played in that same 2005-2009 CUSA era based on their NFL careers.

I just updated to bump Forte over DeAngelo...I didn't know Matt Forte had such great NFL numbers...and dang, you can make a case for Matt Forte to lead this list...if it wasn't for that 2009 Chris Johnson season...

Devon could have been a great NFL fullback if he played a decade earlier.

If Devon had not hurt his back he could have been a Jerome Bettis type of RB in the NFL. A guy that makes his own hole by just running over you.

Bettis was compact. Devon was far too similar to Brandon Jacobs, big .. absolutely...but ran really tight and upright.

What Derrick Henry is doing would be peak Devon if he learned how to get low and avoid contact better. And I love (still love) me some Devon, don't get me wrong.

He only RBed as a junior. You think he wouldn't have learned some of that between junior and senior year? The injury wrecked him. But even wrecked the Panthers put him on a roster, just in case he was able to recover. No one does that unless the upside is that good.

I know, he was a TE those early years. He transitioned to RB to help the pass blocking. I would have liked to see those first few practices when Rockhead took those first few handoffs, and what the coaches must have experienced.

In my movie mind, it would have been like that moment a coach clicks his stopwatch and has that stunned stupid face...

It was heartbreaking to see such tremendous potential stopped with an unfortunate injury, Devon was a one man wrecking crew.

Now, I think he needs to ease into it, take it slow. First season take your time to feel things out...get the team peaking at the end of the season...

I'm glad Huff took it slow and eased into it 03-wink They may have already peaked, like a teenage boy getting his first nut. Hard to top those results other than cleaning up some football mistakes.

What do people think about Huff now? We got Nick Saban at Walmart pricing. Just kidding, but I'm pleased with game one of the Huff era. Looks like the defense didn't skip a beat, but we'll have to see against a more traditional style offense.

I think I just woke everyone up after reading that. Of all the new head coaches heading into the 2021 season Huff scored the second most points.

Steve Sarkisian Texas 38 -- Beat ULL
Clark Lea Vanderbilt 3 -- Lost to ETSU
Bryan Harsin Auburn 60 -- Beat Akron
Gus Malzahn UCF 36 -- Beat Boise State
Bret Bielema Illinois 30 -- Lost to UTSA
Will Hall Southern Miss 7 -- Lost to South Alabama
Andy Avalos Boise State 31 -- Lost to UCF
Blake Anderson Utah State 26 -- Beat Washington State
Josh Heupel Tennessee 38 -- Beat Bowling Green
Butch Jones Arkansas State 40 -- Beat Central Arkansas
Kane Wommack South Alabama 31 -- Beat Southern Miss
Shane Beamer South Carolina 46 -- Beat Eastern Illinois
Terry Bowden ULM 10 -- Lost to Kentucky
Jedd Fisch Arizona 16 -- Lost to BYU
Lance Leipold Kansas 17 -- Beat South Dakota
Charles Huff Marshall 49 -- Beat Navy

If Auburn plays anyone with a soft pulse no way do they score 60 points. In 11 years Doc scored 49 points or more exactly 5 times. If Doc was coaching the Navy game once we scored 28 Doc would have shut everything down and the final score would have been something like 31-7 or 35-7. Huff scored 21 points in the 4th quarter. I can't remember the last time a Marshall team done that.

And kept "playing" the game with 2nd stringers, not just cleanup.

I looked it up. The last time Marshall scored 21 in the 4th quarter was the dreadful 2016 season in the 75 game against MTSU.
