Which is approximately half of the optimum number of parking spaces within reasonable walking distance required for a stadium of this size. The rule of thumb is 3.5 occupants of each vehicle. So, 47,100/3.5= 13,457 needed spaces for a complete sell-outs at the stated capacity. Buses and shuttles can mitigate this to a degree. But only 7000*3.5 means there could be issues for any crowds above 25,000.

From my time on the original on-campus football stadium committee, we found that the average number of vehicle occupants in Birmingham is lower than that, more like in the 2.3-2.5 range compounding the issue, unless folks are more willing to carpool to the games. At the 2.5 rate, the parking will sustain crowds of around 17,500.

Evidence of that being that being the case is that sell-out events at the 17,000 seat arena utilize most all of those same spaces, plus the spaces that were under the interstate and those that were on the site of where the stadium now sits. The new 100 space lot only replaces a very small portion of those lost to progress.

Parking is going to be a huge issue until those promised additional decks are constructed, unless a lot of people will choose to park on campus and take the shuttles to the game.

Should UAB have another long home winning streak, riding back to campus after another win will be fun.

UAB Stadium Update
I’m assuming the “City Walk Tailgate” is put on by UAB? “Blazer Village” has existed for years and has inflatables for kids...more for families. I don’t think (my guess...I mean, we are playing an FCS team in Montgomery to avoid playing in LF) UAB wants anything to do with LF any longer and the campus green is huge and the perfect setting for tailgating.

Campus is 8th-10th Ave So. and stadium is 9th Ave North so that’s definitely not walkable. Personally, with the Uptown entertainment area and Top Golf is going to create a really unique atmosphere.

Gone be purdy for an off-campus, city owned venue.

I love how you guys have "bowled" it in. Very nice.

I believe it will seat around 47k

47,100 normally. They can add temporary stands at the end zones for a big event or bowl game if needed. This is going to be a helluva nice stadium. Wide open sight lines, the stadium equivalent of a house with an open floor plan.

If you can afford the higher room price, the Westin downtown by the BJCC will be a block from the stadium. Your room will be closer than most of us will be able to park. Anyone who plans to come to an away game here should consider it, because I doubt that there's another stadium in the conference with hotel space as nice anywhere near as close to the stadium.

This thing is going to be an absolute gem. I can't wait for October!

Yup you can just feel the excitement in that article. Can't wait to take a trip down. It's amazing to see how UAB was brought back from the brink to elite flagship status.

Not hardly, but never say never. South has a nice stadium, but this one in Birmingham will be "the cream of the crop" among the G-5 conference stadiums.

We are stoked about our new stadium for sure. I had season tix to USA games last year and enjoyed the new stadium. It really sucked to open it during the pandemic, but I enjoyed the freedom to move around for better seats and no lines at the concession stands:). Hopefully people will calm down over this virus crap by next season and both programs will pack in the fans.
