Just depends what someone wants out of life. I wouldn’t live in union county if the tax rate was 0. It’s a boring, soulless place. It’s the only county that touches mecklenburg that I have never even considered purchasing a house in. I grew up there, but beyond visiting my parents there is nothing to draw me back. It’s fine for people that just want land and a nice home, I’m not knocking that, it’s just not something that appeals to everyone and I’m sure someone that is already looking in Myers Park is not going to be someone that wants that lifestyle.

Everywhere in union county doesn’t have low taxes anyway. Waxhaw’s tax rate is 38.5 cents per $100. Charlotte’s is 46 cents. When you add The county taxes, meck comes out a little higher but not outrageously so. For a major city, Charlotte has a very low tax rate at 1.28%.

if you're throwing down a couple mill for a house, I hope you're not concerned about the few extra k in tax every year. That's like dropping 100 grand on a sports car but then complaining about having to put higher octane gas in it.


if you're going to live in any of the adjoining counties to Mecklenburg, i'd take the "nice" part of Union (Weddington/Marvin/upper Waxhaw) over any of the others, but I get your point. The thing that has kept us from moving down there is the amenities part. Union county has not invested in its parks the way meck has, and other than a few places in waxhaw, the options to eat are rather limited. And I say that as someone who lives in an area that is still relatively dominated by big chains. But at least I can jump on 485 to 77 to get to southend or take Rea road to Southpark in ~15 minutes rather than fight the mess that 16 has become.

Its a self perpetuating problem. I live in Chattanooga and its one of the highest concentrations of private schooled education in America. 30%

Even in the extremely affluent areas, all of the kids are private schooled, so it leaves the lower demographic incomes in public school, throughout the city. You have to get pretty far out (Soddy) to see a mix of incomes in the public schools.

Even if this fights an individuals moralistic view point, its hard to lead the charge with your own child.

Yep--I went to McCallie in the late 80's and no kids that I knew went to public school in the city. Between my school, GPS, Baylor and the catholic private, there are only so many kids to go around in that small town.

Recommend it? Our son goes to Bright now and we keep hearing "McCallie Men, Baylor boys". Its crazy how divisive it all is. They wont let the kids wear middle/high school paraphernalia on free dress days because of the contention.

Not sure when youve visitied, but Chatt is bursting at the seams now.

Actually I will be in chattavegas in October this year for my 30 year reunion that was cancelled last year for covid. I really like St. John's restaurant as it is excellent so I have seen the city grow in areas I never thought possible.

As far as the Big Blue vs Big Red debate. Look at the schools placement and achievements. McCallie wins hands down. I came to the school as a boarder all 4 years from podunk East Texas. I learned more about how to be a man and take care of myself then I ever did at college or law school. Place teaches you how to study and prioritize your time which is valuable for later in life. If I had a son, he would go to McCallie. Fort Worth has some really great private schools but none of them hold a candle to McCallie. Good luck to you and your son!

NN, that part about how bad Union County is and it being soulless is likely the dumbest and most uninformed post I have read in a long time. Only the SV area meets your description. I'm guessing that's where you grew up.
