RE: Official Transfer Thread
Read that most FBS programs had 8 to 15 players enter the portal for this cycle. Did EMU have any?

I believe DJ Jackson is the only player they have lost to the portal so far.

This is messy and a lot of athletes will be without a scholarship.

Probably see a lot go FCS after being caught in a "numbers" game. As I've said before, smart coaches will bank some scholarships knowing that the transfer market will be ripe to shop.

These are quotes from the article linked above:

“We’re going to see a situation this year where there could be up to 1,000 players in the portal with nowhere to go,” said South Florida coach Jeff Scott.

The scary part of a player going into the portal is that they essentially give up their scholarship at their current school once they enter, which means players could end up dropping levels or not playing at all because of lack of opportunity. Not all players fully understand that risk.

************
These are young kids, say 19 - 22, making a HUGE decision which could affect BOTH their athletic and academic careers. I keep telling folks, 4 or 5 years of college can be say $150K or more. Don't want to p*ss it away.

I know a kid (son of a friend) who was a legit. 3-star bball player. He verballed to a high major school. The school fired their HC. He signed anyway. Didn't work out. He lost say a $200K education. Ended up playing one year at a local JUCO.

Players shouldnt have to give up their scholarship when they enter the transfer portal. coaches dont have to quit to interview for other jobs.

My labor friendly guy makes a valid point!

I believe in the concept of risk that our capitalist system depends on. That said, why do NCAA coaches enjoy multi-year contracts and the subsequent large buyouts when a student athlete must have their scholarship renewed on an annual basis? I'm pretty sure that Alabama would sign up Nick Saban for another year after this season.

EMU has by far the least amount of guys in the transfer portal. We are losing a D lineman and gaining Kelly and the QB. I looked at every team who has players in the portal and it's great to see we have only 1. Northern Illinois for example has 13. Confirmation to what we knew that CC is recruiting the right kind of guys.

Not that NIU is a disaster - but EMU is trending upwards and has a potential division title next year. its a lot easier to stay on a winner.

If NIU has 13 players transferring and went winless then they may be on the brink of disaster. Not sure if both of those factors are the result of playing a lot of young guys though.

So i actually think Carey left Hammock a not great situation and i think Hammock will sort it out in the coming years but that team is in a rebuild for sure.

The key word is stability. CC has brought players in who understand the work they need to do in the classroom and on the field. Jeez I can remember years of roster turmoil and playing true freshmen without a redshirt year. That nonsense has stopped under CC.

I agree that when we see student-athletes doing well in the classroom, not quitting the team, not transferring, etc. all of that shows a strong, high character team.

When CC took the job one person left the team - when Ron English took over dozens left.

Not a 100% sure, but I think his scholarship opens up for another recruit. He wouldn't have been a returning senior, but a rising senior.

I'm happy for him. With the 2020 'freebie' he has two years of eligibility left. Can move on. Many schools don't want a player for one season, but will be glad to look at a 2 to play 2 player.

I'd think he might get some G5 looks or could move to FCS. There are a lot of quality FCS teams all over the country like Mo. Valley Conf. (very strong), CAA (along the mid-Atlantic and Northeast), SWAC, etc.

I'd think, like a buffet, he has a good choice of what he wants in a school.

Such a bummer. Although when you see less targets than Tanner Knue, I get it. He was so underutilized this past season.

Agree. I still worry about so many QB. One of the key people e.g. Grissom, May, might be having the same thoughts.
