RE: JMU @ VCU
I know this board, and it's bar for a program can move up or down dramatically in a half, but for me I think we are still in the figure things, and each other out. VCU took the foot of the gas, and we got hot. It was a nice flash, but we have a ways to go. Clunkers and flashes over the next 2 months are expected by me.

Play hard, develop as a team, and be playing top 4 CAA basketball come late February. If this team can get to the semis this year, we'll be a contender next year.

Not anywhere near there yet, but be patient and hopefully we get the most improved team from start to finish in the CAA.

I said repeatedly the last 4 years with a solid coach this team could of "easily" of been top 4 in the CAA the last four years. Our issue was not talent.

BTW - I think VCU took a strategy that benefited us.

They forced Matt to pass the ball which allowed us to get better shot opportunities.

He did a nice job finding his open team mates. If I played JMU this year I would not double him nearly as much as VCU did. I'd let him get his ton of shots, and solidly defend the other players.

over 120 posts in a MBB thread... and the word "fire" was only mentioned twice where it was about Harvey and Christmas playing good basketball while not being directed at any coach or staff member losing their job.

Could things be looking up for the JMU Basketball boards? Stay tuned!

In fairness I’m not sure the Lewis volume shooter thing is accurate this year - it’s early yet but many times Matt plays off ball and Morse Strickland and now even Edwards have the ball in the half court. Vcu was doubling Matt off ball too. Whatever the case he had a reasonably good game and is a good player so no matter how the other teams defend him he is an asset in the floor (just check his plus minus or advanced stats) passing rebounding defending and getting shots. He ain’t perfect but he’s good.

Well done lads. Way to not give up the fight.
I read on Facebook JMUNation, where someone discounted our effort, saying we only made it seem close. That's a very naive way of looking at things. A basketball game is a series of many short chess matches. Just because we lost the early matches, doesn't mean our adjustments in the later portions weren't as valid as our opponent's early moves. Hoping we can really build off this.

Northeastern had the reverse happen yesterday- good first half and horrible second. I’d much rather have a strong finish than a strong start. We’ll see but the team really played hard and looked strong in the second half. It’s definitely something to build on.

RE: JMU @ VCU
Maybe we get a few more fans back in the fold. I agree that there is no moral victory, yet it matters that the Dukes played a much closer game than the experts thought and they played it against VCU which has high visibility within the state, within our alumni geography, and even some national play. Eyebrows raised maybe just a little, but raised nonetheless.

The bigger impact IMO is the team will improve from learning all the tough lessons in this loss. These are the games that prepare the team to win late in the year against the best competition.
The team gets nothing from playing The likes of Alice Limestone.

Still holding out hope that JMU can make another one or two games happen between Christmas and Jan 3. Technically they can play 3 more OOC and be at the NCAA max of 27 this year.

Assign The student managers to 8 hour rotating shifts so they can be social media Hawkeyes for the next 11 days. As soon as there is an announced Covid postponement or cancellation, JMU should be blowing up somebody’s phone within minutes. There are only two types of programs in the Wild West of scheduling ... the quick and the dead. We all know games will be there for the taking, the question is who secures them first.

Actually I think yesterday's game was a moral victory. 04-cheers

JMU is not going for an at-large bid. This was not a conference game. This was against a team that has been steps ahead of us for years. We were way down, and did not give up. New coach. New players. Lost games, and team practice due to covid.

Not really a Moral victory person, but yesterday certainly was one for me.

Welll, let’s not get carried away here!

Was a pretty good showing, I said before tip off I’d be ok if we kept it within 20, that’s how low my bar is.

Seeing the Dutchmen take down the tics, then we came within one bucket of upsetting fece U, that could have been a pretty good day for OOC games.

But a L is still a L.

Hope they can stay healthy and keep working. Seems a good group of guys.

Same here but...Hell yeah that was a moral victory. That may have been the best JMU MBB game I've seen in the past 6 years. Bodies flying around, diving for loose balls, a little trash talk, physical post play, 4 out of 5 playing defense the right way. Even when they we down 20+ it looked like they were enjoying "the game". It was actually fun to watch.

For years I thought Matt had all the talent in the world but didn't have the mental side figured out. I get a sense late in the game it may have started to "click", the college game is played a whole lot different than it was in HS/AAU.

I have to confess, that is the first time in around 25 years I was pulling for a team that VCU was playing. I think that lose was a moral victory for fans as well as the program.
