Probably to announce which bowl we're going to and put an end to all the fire Fuente rumors.

Not sure what Babcock was hoping to accomplish with this press conference but unless he was wanting to put himself on as hot of a seat as Fuente he sure as hell didn't accomplish it with that fiasco of a press conference.

Wtf did I just watch? They really called the presser to announce that he's staying? ESPN is running with the headline right now of Fuente retained. What a confidence inspiring headline. The press conference equivalent of the dreaded athletic director's vote of confidence. Dead man walking.

I have a friend whose son is a VT commit.
He told me the son had heard that Fuente was going to be bought out. Maybe the alumni spearheading the removal effort couldn't raise the $10 million necessary to buy him out.
My friend just wanted to get past signing day in hopes of his son being able to keep his spot (low three star, VT was his only P5 offer, which is the real story of Fuente's problem. He may be able to coach, recruiting is another matter).

The story I've heard is that Whit had the money in hand and was going to move on, but there was major pushback from the BOV about the optics of firing Fuente.

Take that for what it's worth, but I've heard too many stories about the current university president's disinterest in athletics and obsession with increasing VT's national reputation to dismiss that story out of hand (for those outside the bubble, VT is building an Innovation Campus in Northern VA to target and pump out computer science talent in conjunction with the Commonwealth's goals that lured Amazon HQ2).

I'm not saying the decisions add up (because personally I feel it's time to move on from Fuente), but apparently a number of high up decision makers were scared of the optics for paying $10M to make a guy go away during the pandemic.
