There's a pretty big hint in President Williams' comment:

"As DSU begins implementing our new strategic plan, it is important the university's name is befitting of a polytechnic-focused institution and will help us recruit, maintain and graduate the best and brightest students."

My guess is they will follow the Cal Poly model (result: "Utah Polytechnic State University) or Virginia Tech model (result: "Utah Polytechnic Institute and State University") and brand themselves as Utah Poly or Utah Tech for short.

Given the closeness of St. George to FLDS areas in Southern Utah/Arizona Strip and the Mormon history, I would think they'd want to avoid the term "Poly" at all costs...

LOL!

UPI (Utah Polytechnic Institute) has a nice sound to it.

I’ll throw out Deseret State University. You keep the same initials. It’s the original name the settlers gave the region. It fits with the Trail Blazers mascot.

I like this one. I'm not Mormon, but it does pay homage to the settlers that built the state which I very much like, and it's appropriate.

You should submit suggestion that to school.

I am hoping for a mascot change in keeping with the LDS theme - the Fighting Danites, who are alleged to have been responsible for the Mlintain Meadows Massacre that occurred near St George.

Ok, Probably not.

That reminds me of the time when my then teenaged sister-in-law was walking the family dog and a pair of missionary boys stopped to talk to her—she introduced the dog as Maroni Killer and then their evangelism effort took a turn for the awkward.

Invoking Mountain Meadows is probably not in good taste...

DSU fan here. Came across this board looking at WAC expansion rumors. I seem to be in the minority of alumni and locals that believe the name change is a good thing.
The majority of the community and alumni seem to be pretty upset about dropping the Dixie name. The name Dixie is all over the place in Southern Utah with several local businesses, Dixie High School, Dixie National Forest among other things using the name. Most locals claim the name has no relation to the Confederate South and dropping the name is destroying the local history. Regardless of what the original intent of the settlers was by calling the region Dixie the problem for the university is that they went all in with the tie to the confederacy by using "Rebels" as the nickname, flying the confederate flag and having a confederate soldier mascot at games, confederate soldier statue on campus, mock slave auctions, etc.

The alumni and community are threatening to withhold support if the name is changed. The school was a JC up until about 15 years ago though so pretty much any alumni age 40+ only attended for a year or two before graduating with a bachelors or graduate degree from somewhere else. I don't think the school receives a ton of financial support from alumni/community right now so it shouldn't have that big of an impact. Most younger alumni that actually attended the school for four years or more seem to be more receptive to the change.

My top choice for a new name would be Zion State University, but I don't think they will use anything with religious ties so Zion and Deseret probably won't be used. HawaiiMongoose nailed it when he mentioned the school's new focus on being a polytechnical institution and I would be surprised if the new name isn't "Utah Tech" or something similar.

Our first Dixie State poster! Welcome to the board. Excellent insights on the name change. Please continue to post and give us the inside Dixie scoop as you can.

My guess is the official name will be Utah Technical Institute and State University but the athletics branding and common name will be Utah Tech.

After some bumps along the way the Utah legislature has approved allowing the university to propose a name change:
