After reading that article, it appears that the only way that it will affect W&M is that we will get more NCAA money when they change the formula to exclude FBS football from the calculations.
Meanwhile, schools that aspire to rise to FBS, like JMU, should be extremely worried. The new FBS organization will probably want to make it extremely difficult to move from FCS to FBS so that all the big football money can be split up into as few portions as possible. The article even talks about how some Group of 6 conference members might want to move out of the FBS umbrella. (Personally, I think it would be stupid at this point for any current FBS school to move down --- they would miss out on a share of the big money that is going to flow to FBS football schools).

UMass and UConn, for two candidates, are way over their heads in FBS, piling up big financial deficits in FBS, being roasted within their own schools, and are solid candidates to move back down to our football level.

I think they'd fold their football programs before moving down to the FCS.

That's what I got out of the article. There's a lot of schools losing money that would rather not lose money. I'm sure some would like to just spend less, but probably a bunch would just as soon spend none. Given our own Title IX issues, for some schools that could solve a lot of athletic department financial problems.

UConn and UMass are in very different positions. UConn averages about 20K for home games while UMass averages less than 10K. UConn is also much better positioned for future conference affiliation than UMass with membership in the AAC. UMass is independent and has huge scheduling issues.

I think this new football governing body, if it happens, is going to pass rules that make it prohibitively expensive for anyone other than the current Power 5 schools to play in it. They are already getting virtually all of the TV money, why would they want to break off and make it easy for the Group of Five schools to come share in that wealth? I think you will see larger scholarship allowances (more than 85) and higher CoAttendance stipends, which schools will have to offer to be eligible to compete in this new league. What was semi-pro football under the guise of amateurism before, will now be full blown, out in the open, semi-pro football. Schools like ODU and JMU simply cannot afford those types of higher expenses and will not be able to join that league unless there is the promise of greater revenues than the current system offers. Why would the Power 5 promise that? Unlike the NCAA basketball tournament, in football the Power 5 don't need the other schools. Only the most well-heeled or delusional Group of Five schools will compete in this new league.
To me, the real question is what happens to the rest of NCAA football. Do we suddenly become 1AAA and the current Group of Five 1AA? If that happens, I think it is very bad for W&M football because we will lose a number of our current peers who will go play in this new Group of Five level.
