That is fantastic. From all the looks of it things are pointing to the build being scheduled after our inaugural season in the FunBelt.

20% growth of total donors is pretty good. Hope that remains a focus moving forward.

Thats incredible. Our fundraising efforts are excellent. The question is, where is the ROI? Why are schools with much smaller budgets and fundraising success, having much better success on the field, on the court or sometimes in facilities? Regardless, congrats to the fundraising team. Thats outstanding work and they're doing their part. I especially liked that they increased younger donors. Thats important.

Really happy with the increase in total donors (especially young). But I agree with the question - when will the $ show on field/court results....time will tell.

While your question is a valid one its hard to point finger at one thing and say this is it. From looking at the college finance db on knight foundation it looks like we are spending a lot on facilities which i am guessing are debt payments. I have no idea what that support and admin compensation is and why its 6.8MM. I am guessing all the non coaching salaries comes from that pool but can't tell for sure.

As per the lack of success its on the coaches and the AD esp Wood Selig who has been an unmitigated disaster so far in his tenure. I believe things can change for better with someone who demands and gets things done that was being seen at other schools in various sports. Our revenue sports are a cluster cluck sans Baseball if we even consider that one and non-revenue sports minus Tennis and Soccer are just horrible.

Look at how little we spend on recruiting. I wonder how that compares to other SBC schools and what they spend on recruiting. that seems to me the biggest suprise

If the is right, which I have a really hard time believing, what we are spending on recruiting seems like a real problem. We are spending $120k across all sports on recruiting?

Great question as recruiting is the lifeblood of any team. Good recruiting and good coaching should equal winning. Once our teams are winning, the financial situation becomes much easier as the stadium will be full (good for sponsors/advertisers) and people like to support a winner. Of course, recruits want to play for a winner too... so its a cycle.

Can you guys use some logic here? This report is from 2021 aka the Covid year when visits weren't allowed and we did all of our recruiting through emails, phone calls and zoom meetings. If you go back to 2019 and 2018, you'll get a covid-free look at the costs and see they spent over $800k both years on recruiting. Based on the bump from 2018 to 2019, I'd expect that number to be higher than $900k and closer to a million in 2022.

Our recruiting budget for all sports seems rather pathetic for the size of our athletic budget. Seems like ODU is falling behind on getting quality NIL deals for players. Look at what FSU is doing with the Battle's End Collective. This is what ODAF needs to be doing with ODU's big donors. It seems like the school is operating at a CAA budget for an FBS Sun Belt conference. ODU should be getting the best recruits at their level due to athletic budget compared to other Sun Belt schools.

Yall gotta stop comparing total budget and start comparing individual sports team budgets like football and basketball. If you do that, you’ll see there isn’t a gap we have over the whole league in football. The total budgets are just a difference in how each state requires their athletic programs and universities to report spending.

ODAF needs to come together and grab all of ODU's top boosters to form some sort of collective to get players NIL deals here. There is NO reason why we cannot be competitive in all sports in the Sun Belt. It is time to stop penny pinching and get quality athletes to come here in all sports. It is time to flex financial muscle against our conference competition.

No. I dont think they are. And if they are, they are certainly not being aggressive enough. We should not be losing players like Jennings to VT and Watson to Memphis if we are aggressive with NIL deals.

Theorhetically, we *should* have the largest budget for individual sports like football and basketball over our in conference competition. So by default, these sports *should* be competitive every year, yet they are wildly inconsistent. Something just isnt adding up here.

Why? Why should we have the largest budget? We are not the largest school in the conference. Just because you imagine we *should* have a bigger budget doesn't make it true. We do not have a larger alumni base than every school. Of the 14 schools only 2 were founded after ODU. Odds are those other 11 schools have a significantly larger alumni base to draw on.

Many of our conference mates have an advantage of not being perceived as a commuter school. Our closest rival is not a commuter school. Being a resident school tends to breed greater allegiance to your alma mater. Those type of alums tend to donate mo' money. Mo' money typically means mo' budget $$$ for sports. Look at what % of ODU undergrads and alumni are military. Those people give very very little money to ODU after they leave. They attend ODU for convenience not loyalty. What other school in the SBC has that type of student body (commuters and military)?

I'm not minimalizing our budget. We rate up there in total athletic budgets in the SBC. However, because of the makeup of our student body and alumni we face a huge uphill battle in fund raising from alumni. We face an uphill battle in the local economy because of the number of Tek and uva and may other schools' graduates.
